BATAVIA, NEW YORK - The Genesee County Sheriff's Office is mourning the loss of one of their own. Sergeant Thomas Sanfratello was killed in the line of duty early Sunday morning.
Sgt. Sanfratello was reportedly breaking up a dispute at the Batavia Downs Gaming and Hotel bar when he was attacked.
The Officer Down Memorial Page reports that one of the patrons “was being escorted from the establishment by Sergeant Sanfratello and security when a second patron attacked him. A violent struggle ensued, during which Sergeant Sanfratello attempted to use his taser on the subject. Sergeant Sanfratello became unresponsive and died despite security personnel and bystanders administering CPR.”
The Batavia Police Department said that 33-year-old Michael J. Elmore allegedly “left and then returned to the Batavia Downs after having been told to leave the premises and he did so with the intent to commit a crime herein.” Elmore was taken into custody and charged with second-degree burglary, aggravated assault upon a police officer, and first-degree aggravated manslaughter.
Lyndsey Jean Wilcox, 39, was also taken into custody in the incident. Police said, “Wilcox remained unlawfully in the Batavia Downs after having been told to leave with the intent to commit a crime therein. It is further alleged that Lyndsey Jean Wilcox attempted to commit the crime of Assault 2nd during the confrontation with Sgt. Sanfratello.”
Wilcox is charged with second-degree burglary and attempted second-degree assault.
Both subjects are expected to be in court this week.
Sergeant Sanfratello was 54 years old and had been with the Genesee County Sheriff’s Office for 32 years. He leaves behind a son and two daughters, as well as his mother, two sisters, and nieces and nephews.
Gilmartin Funeral Home and Cremation Company Inc. is handling the funeral arrangements, according to Genesee County Police.
