HOUSTON, TX - In the evening hours on Saturday, December 14th, a shooting at a pop-up party in a makeshift club left two teenagers dead and three others wounded.
According to Fox News, Houston police responded to the scene around 11:20 p.m. after reports of shots were being fired at a club in the 10100 block of Jensen Drive. Upon arriving on scene, officers found a large group of people running out of the makeshift club. As it cleared out, officers attended to several victims who were suffering from gunshot wounds.
A 16-year-old boy was pronounced dead at the scene and a 14-year-old girl was transported to the hopsital, where she later died from her injuries. A 13-year-old girl remains in critical condition at the hospital and a 19-year-old woman who was in non-critical condition, checked herself into the hospital. There is another victim, but their age and condition is unknown at this time.
According to reports, Houston Police Assistant Chief Luis Menendez-Sierra said that most of the people attending the event, which appeared to be organized via social media, were juveniles. They all gathered inside of an empty business. Police have not yet identified a suspect and are asking those who were at the party to call with any information.
Menendez-Sierra said, "We are assuring the public that we are going to put all our resources into finding out what happened here tonight and who did this so we can bring them to justice."
Police said some witnesses told detectives that they saw a man wearing all black, including a hooded sweatshirt and a black mask covering his face, shoot a pistol into a crowd of people at the venue. On X, Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said that "makeshift, unsanctioned pop-up parties can quickly lead to chaos and violence," adding that "pop-up parties raise public safety concerns and teens need to stay away for their own safety."
KHOU reported that Houston Mayor John Whitmire said that the party was unregulated and security either wasn't there or took off after the shooting. He said, "I'm here to support our first responders, learn the circumstances of a tragedy. I'll be following this for several days to see how something like this created, an impromptu party, I'd call it.
He added, "It's a tragedy, I feel for the families. We ought to keep them in our prayers. We lost some young people tonight that was very preventable if they didn't come to locations such as this." The investigation remains ongoing.
