DALLAS, TX - In the evening hours on Thursday, August 29th, a Dallas police officer was fatally shot and two others were injured in what officials are now calling a targeted attack.
According to CBS News, during a press conference, Dallas Police Chief Eddie Garcia confirmed that Officer Darron Burks was the victim of a targeted attack rather than an ambush. He said in a statement, "Officer Burks was executed ... Our officers were targeted for nothing more than the uniform they wear and for the brave and honorable job that they do."
Burks, who is 46-years-old, was shot and killed while he was waiting in a parking lot between calls. The suspect, 30-year-old Corey Cobb-Bey, approached Burks and after a brief conversation, pulled out a gun and "executed" Burks. Garcia said that dispatch noticed a sound from Burk's radio and immediately sent help.
Two officers, who were responding to the officer-in-distress call, were shot by Cobb-Bey. According to NBC5, Kristin Lowman, a spokesperson for the Dallas Police Department (DPD), said, "When our officers arrived, they found a Dallas police officer who had been shot in his marked patrol vehicle."
Garcia said that another sergeant arrived and spotted Cobb-Bey standing near his vehicle. He directed the next arriving officer to follow Cobb-Bey, who drove away toward interstate 35E.
He was followed nearly 25 miles to Lewisville, where the stopped on the highway near Texas 121. Cobb-Bey then got out of his vehicle with his shotgun in his hand and pointed it toward the officers who followed him. Garcia said that Officers Nathaniel Baker, David Lem, Corie Reed, Richard Pace, Vladmir Perez, and Joel Portillo all fired on Cobb-Bey, hitting him multiple times.
Two shotguns, a .22-caliber handgun, and a 9-millimeter handgun were recovered from two scenes. The guns were legally owned.
Garcia said that three days before the shooting, Cobb-Bey approached an unmarked unit and questioned that officer, then one day before the shooting, he posted to social media that an event was happening on Friday. However, Garcia said that there is no indication at this time that he and Burks knew each other.
Kristin Lowman said that all three officers were taken to local hospitals. Burks, who joined the force recently after teaching math for nearly 17 years, was pronounced dead. DPD chaplains said that Sr. Cpl. Jamie Farmer, has superficial wounds, but is awake and in "good spirits." The other officer who was shot, Sr. Cpl. Karissa David, has more serious injuries but are non-life-threatening.
Garcia said, "As a department and as a family, we are devastated. Last night we lost a brother, a hero. Officer Darron Burks was a son, a nephew, a friend to many, and he was senselessly tragically murdered in the line of duty." He added, "I know that the word ambush has been thrown around in the last 24 hours or so. That's not what happened here. Officer Burks was executed."
Garcia said that investigators learned that within the last week, Cobb-Bey posted several videos online where he claimed police officers in an unmarked black SUV were following him. In another video, he confronted who he thought were police officers in an unmarked white SUV, asking if everything was OK or if crimes were going on that the community should be aware of.
The chief also said that there is evidence that Cobb-Bey was a member of the Moorish Sovereign Citizens. The movement is a "collection of independent organizations and individuals that emerged in the early 1990s as an offshoot of the anti-government sovereign citizens movement," whose members "have engaged in violent confrontations with law enforcement."
The chief said, "We came close to losing the other officers, officers who put their lives on the line to protect their brother. It is by the grace of God they are still with us today." Farmer was released from the hospital on Friday, August 30th. David remains in the hospital.
Garcia said that he saw photos shared online of him shaking Burk's hand during graduation from the academy in December 2023. He said, "It hurts. I gave him his badge. He was so proud. Of course, it hurts ... There's a briefing room, a detail room of officers that worked with him that are hurting. You ask your men and women to do a job for this city, they do it. You carry that. I carry that. I don't know what else to say. It hurts."
According to CBS News, Texas Can Academies said that Burks taught from 2006 to 2023. The academy released a statement saying, "During his time with us, Mr. Burks made a lasting impact as a Math teacher, instrucitonal coach, and mentor. His commitment to education and the community profoundly touched the lives of countless students and colleagues. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and the Dallas Police Department during this difficult time. His legacy of service will be deeply missed."
This is the first line-of-duty death within the Dallas Police Department since 2022. Mayor Eric Johnson said in a statement, "Dallas has lost a hero. We all grieve with the officer's family today and we oray for a full and switft recovery for the two officers who were wounded. This is devastating. In Dallas, we put public safety first. We stand up to violent criminals. We ask our police officers to do dangerous work so the rest of us can sleep peacefully.
These dedicated public servants do so with grace, honor, respect, humility, and extraordinary courage. And this attack on three of our protectors is nothing short of an attack on our city, our families, and our way of life We must continue their work to stop violence in our communities. We must never forget their sacrifice. And we must take the time to come together and lift each other up as we mourn our fallen."
Garcia said in a statement, "The investigation determined last night was premeditated, again for no other reason than the uniform we wear, that my men and women proudly wear, and for the brave and honorable job our men and women do each day."

The article only says that Cobb-Bey, the shooter, was hit multiple times. There was no where that said if he survived, I hope not.

I see they are spewing the pig propaganda again as usual .... Using oxymorons like sovereign citizen .... There is NO SUCH THING folks .... So-called citizens are SLAVES by definition .... Nothing but pig double speak ...... The Dallas pigs are cover up something ......... AND, BY the way, the uniforms you wear, by OUR BILL of RIGHTS and DECLARATION of INDEPENDENCE, ARE REASON ENOUGH to target pigs .... The job of policing others is NOT an honorable profession .... ONLY sick, totalitarian, psychopaths, would think so ......

"Legally owned guns" is irrelevant, stupid, and misleading. The focus should be on criminal democrats committing crimes (as usual), with a weapon.
