ATLANTA, GA - An Atlanta 16-year-old, Jakari Brooks, was reportedly killed in an early-morning shooting over a scooter, according to his mother. Brooks was the nephew of Rayshard Brooks, a man who was shot and killed after attacking Atlanta police officers with a TASER in 2020 during a DUI arrest.

According to WSB-TV, Atlanta PD responded to reports of a shooting at approximately 4:30 a.m. on July 17th and found Brooks shot to death. The victim's mother, Stardrecous Brooks, told reporters that she heard five gunshots and when he son didn't return home she went to look for him.

Stardrecous said, “I was walking around trying to find him. I didn’t want to think it, but I said my baby was probably laying up in the woods. I kept saying that.”

Speaking with Fox 5 Atlanta, Stardrecous said she believed her son was killed in a fight over scooter. "The house right there they went to retrieve a scooter, whatever they was doing. The people start shooting."

She explained that her older son went to find his brother and located his body hours later. "I heard it, I heard it, I heard it," she continued. "It was like five shots, and I seen the police riding back and forth up the other street, but no one called and told me anything."  "I have a son that's not coming back no more, and I'm not going to be able to see him," she said.

WSB-TV reporters spoke with a man at the home Stardrecous referred to. He told reporters that two boys were attempting to steal from the home and the homeowner fired on them in self-defense. Stardrecous said that her son's friend who was with him fled the scene.

Investigators are currently seeking help from the public to gather more information on the incident as they attempt to determine a suspect and motive. What is a 16 year old doing out of the house at 04:30???

David

Stealing a scooter. C'mon man. You tellin me you never went out and stole stuff at 0430 when you were 16?

L

There is no reason this 16 year old was out at that time. Maybe mom should be charged since she let this kid run the streets and made someone else have to defend their home and take this kids life. So sick of people having kids and then not raising them, start holding these pathetic parents accountable.

Rayshard, Jakari, Stardrecous. Names designed to segregate.

I guess rotten apples don't fall far from the tree, as I recall hearing once !
