WILMINGTON, DE - A suspect identified as 23-year-old Tyrese Knuckles led police on a vehicle pursuit from Delaware into Delaware County during the early morning hours on Thursday, April 4th after being shot and stealing a police car.
According to reports, the initial incident began at 2:30 a.m. at an apartment complex in Wilmington when police were called to the area on reports of a domestic violence related incident. Upon arriving on scene, police in New Castle County, Delaware, found that Knuckles had already left the area. Police were able to find Knuckles and when they did, he allegedly got into a physical altercation with one of the officers.
A struggle ensued and an eight-year veteran of the New Castle County Division of Police shot Knuckles. New Castle County Police Captain Jamie Leonard said in a statement, "During the course of that confrontation, our officer displayed and deployed his Taser energy weapon, which was ineffective."
According to NBC10, the officer shot Knuckles three times. After being shot, Knuckles jumped into a police cruiser and sped away, leading officers on a chase into Pennsylvania. Leonard said, "At that point in time the male was able to enter the police vehicle, which was in very close proximity to him, and flee the scene."
During the police chase, Knuckles struck several other police vehicles along Route 7 near Milltown Road before heading to I-95 where Knuckles eventually crashed in the Chester, Delaware County area. Leonard said, "During the course of that car chase, there were several accidents that occurred. All of these accidents involved police vehicles. There were no civilian accidents that occurred."
Following the crash, Knuckles fled again on foot before he was taken into custody without further incident. Knuckles was transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center where he was treated for gunshot wounds and other injuries sustained during the incident. According to officials, he remains in stable condition.
Another officer involved in the incident was also taken to a nearby hospital after being injured in a collision during the police pursuit. He is said to be in stable condition as well. The veteran officer who discharged his weapon has been placed on administrative leave lending an internal investigation, as per protocol for all officer-involved shootings.
According to reports, police were taking video of the scene on I-95 northbound of Chester, about a mile away from Route 322. I-95 was blocked off between the Commodore Barry Bridge and Kerlin Street for several hours.
After his arrest, police found out that Knuckles was wanted in Philadelphia for stalking. Pennsylvania State Police are assisting the New Castle County Police with the investigation of the collision that occurred in Delaware County.
