Suspect shoots Orthodox Jewish man near synagogue, shouts 'Allahu Akbar' before firing on police

CHICAGO, IL - Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, was arrested by the Chicago Police Department on allegations that he shot a 39-year-old man wearing a Jewish Kippah multiple times in a Saturday attack near an area Synagogue. The victim, an Orthodox Jewish man unidentified in reports, was treated for non-fatal injuries and discharged the same day.

Superintendent Larry Snelling told reporters at a press conference Monday, "During the shooting, the offender approached a 39-year-old male and shot him in the shoulder without saying a word," according to NBC News.

After the victim was taken away by ambulance, Abdallahi "reemerged from an alley and fired shots at the officers and at the responding paramedics,” Chicago Deputy Police Chief Kevin Bruno told reporters per The New York Post. Reportedly, the assailant screamed "Allahu Akbar" before opening fire at police, per The Jerusalem Post.

The Jewish United Fund substantiated this claim, stating that police informed them of this during a meeting reported by CBS News. The group confirmed this in a statement, saying, “[Chicago Police Department] recognizes that the pace of publicly available information about the investigation adds an additional layer of frustration for our community.”

“Unfortunately, unsubstantiated and outright false information is spreading and is significantly contributing to unnecessary, unhelpful anxiety. Law enforcement’s priority is doing nothing to jeopardize the investigation and eventual prosecution.”

Abdallahi sustained multiple gunshot wounds during a three-minute shootout with police and was rushed to an area hospital in critical condition.

The shootout was captured on a ring camera and the footage is going viral on X. Additional footage obtained by The Daily Wire showed police engaging the gunman via a home surveillance system.

The Post Millennial Editor-at-Large Andy Ngo shared video of the suspect being transported to the hospital after the shootout, writing, "Footage has emerged of 22-year-old Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, the Muslim gunman accused of shooting a Jewish man and first responders while shouting, Allahu akbar. He was taken to hospital for injuries from being shot by police after he allegedly opened fire on them."

As of this report, Abdallahi has been charged with six counts of attempted murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and aggravated battery according to the New York Post, and is due in court Tuesday. Several Jewish organizations and political figures including the JUF and Chicago Alderperson Debra Silverstein have raised concerns that he has not been charged with a hate crime.

Silverstein told the Chicago Sun-Times“I am very disappointed by this turn of events and strongly encourage the Cook County State’s Attorney Office to prosecute the offender to the full extent of the law.”

“The Jewish community is always on high alert, and this is just adding to our anxiety,” she added.
