Grand Rapids, MI: A teenager who responded to a local park in Grand Rapids, Michigan, after believing others were intending to fight his younger brother allegedly pulled out a handgun and shot and killed multiple people. He was arrested, charged, and is now set to stand trial.
Rafael Martinez-Lopez, 18, as of now is going to stand trial for the murder and multiple gun-related charges over the incident that occurred May 5, 2026, where a mother intervened after her son was shot, and then was shot herself.
The Shooting Incident
According to prosecutors, the incident began after Martinez-Lopez's younger brother was excluded from joining a pickup soccer game involving a group of children and teenagers outside Southwest Elementary School.
Later, Martinez-Lopez went to the park and confronted the group, accusing them of wanting to fight his younger brother. The teenagers responded that “they had only wanted to play soccer” and had returned with their own ball after being told they could not join the original game.
Police allege that the confrontation quickly escalated when Martinez-Lopez pulled out a handgun and opened fire. One of the victims, Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, age unknown but believed to be a minor, was fatally shot during the gunfire. The mother then confronted the shooter but was also mortally shot.
After hearing what had happened, the father of Cuevas-Griffin, Jose Luis Villarreal, rushed to the scene and intervened in an effort to protect the teenagers, but he was also shot.
Villarreal's teenage son later testified that he ran home to get his father after believing one of his friends had been shot, only for the encounter to end in the fatal shooting of Cuevas-Griffin and the wounding of his father.
One witness testified and told the courts, "He had walked up a few steps and then that was when he pulled out the gun. I told my dad I had seen Jeremiah fall, so I assumed he would be dead. I didn't know if anybody else is shot so I just called my dad and told him Jeremiah got shot."
Throughout the chaotic scene, they later noticed that the mother was also shot. Another eyewitness, a teenager who recorded part of the scene on her cell phone, also testified in court.
"As soon as I seen the gun, I ducked down under by the car," she stated. "I thought, 'He's [Jeremiah] down — he's dead’. After looking at Jeremiah, I seen Savanah fall down … so I knew she was hit."
The 19-second recording was played in court that reportedly showed Martinez-Lopez taking out a handgun then opening fire, as family members in attendance at the courthouse can be seen crying. Martinez-Lopez kept his head down for most of the court appearance.
His younger brother, who was part of the initial interaction between him and the other kids in the playground, also testified and said he was “frightened” after the first encounter and thought one of the other kids had a weapon because of “the way he lifted his shirt”.
"Someone pulled up their shirt, and it looked like they had something, but I didn't see it that good," the boy said in court. He then said that after the shooting, they returned home and “locked the doors and watched movies.”
The prosecution is still visiting potential plea deals, although no formal offers have yet been made. Martinez-Lopez remains in jail for two counts of murder and numerous weapons violations.
