MEMPHIS, TN – A 46-year-old woman out of Memphis is facing serious charges after authorities discovered the “mummified” corpse of her daughter inside of a hotel room where the woman was staying.
Authorities in Memphis made a shocking discovery during a welfare check on a woman said to be having a mental health crisis at a Home Inn and Suites, as deputies with the Shelby County Sheriff's Office responded to the hotel on July 11th over reports of a woman identified as Kimberly Moore having made a series of unusual statements in front of hotel staff.
Moore had reportedly claimed that her husband owned the hotel located on the 7900 block of Lowrance Road and was trying to “ensure employees were doing their job,” according to officials. The woman had apparently continued to repeat these claims upon the arrival of deputies, but it’s what deputies found inside of Moore’s hotel room that resulted in her arrest.
Deputies on scene noticed an unnerving odor emanating from Moore’s room and began to investigate when the woman claimed she couldn’t smell anything. Laying on the bed inside of the hotel was Moore’s daughter, with authorities describing the cadaver as “unresponsive, cold to the touch, malnourished and mummified.” While a cause of death has yet to be publicly released, medical examiners have confirmed the young woman had been dead for “quite some time.”
Following Moore’s arrest, authorities say she refused to give any relevant statement pertaining to the investigation outside of repeatedly claiming that her daughter was “still here.” Investigators determined Moore was suffering from some form of mental health crisis, believing the suspect to be hallucinating and acting in a “disoriented and irritable” manner, which resulted in Moore undergoing an evaluation at a separate facility.
Moore has since been transferred to the Shelby County Jail and is being held on a $5,000 bond over charges of abuse of a corpse and failure to report a dead body. It’s unclear whether Moore will be facing additional charges related to her daughter’s death, as the investigation is currently ongoing. The suspect’s next court date is on July 15th according to jail records.
