AUSTIN, TX – A Democratic Texas state representative reportedly had to disconnect from a conference call that included the likes of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Senator Cory Booker earlier in August, reportedly saying before the abrupt disconnect that she was informed her participation in the call was “a felony,” as reported by Fox News.
Democratic state Rep. Nicole Collier, one of the many Texas Democrats who participated in the breaking quorum stunt this summer, apparently participated in a conference call on August 20th, along with other notable Democrats, where she claimed she had to leave the call after being informed she was committing a felony.
Democratic National Committee (DNC) Chair Ken Martin was reportedly in the midst of speaking on the call when Rep. Collier interrupted with, “Sorry, I have to leave. They said it’s a felony for me to do this. Apparently, I can’t be on the floor or in a bathroom.”
The Texas Democrat was seemingly talking to someone off camera during the call when she was allegedly informed of the purported felony she was accused of committing, saying to the person off camera, “You told me I was only allowed to be here in the bathroom…No, hold on – bye everybody, I’ve got to go.”
Some of the participants on the call reacted to the assertions made by Rep. Collier before she abruptly departed the conversation, with Sen. Booker saying, “That is outrageous. Let me tell you something, Rep. Collier in the bathroom has more dignity than Donald Trump in the Oval Office.”
The Senator representing New Jersey continued his diatribe of outrage, adding, “What they’re trying to do right there is silence an American leader, silence a Black woman, and that is outrageous. What we just witnessed, them trying to shut her down and saying it's illegal for her to be in the bathroom and on this call, this is the lengths that they’re going to in Texas.”
It’s currently unclear as to what, if any, law was broken by Rep. Collier in connection with the call she participated in with Democrats outside of her home state of Texas. While some are speculating whether taking the video call inside the restroom could run afoul of state visual recording laws, no other state officials have come forth to either confirm the account or justify the purported allegations of felonious behavior.
