DALLAS, TX - Ahmad Alkhalaf, a 66-year-old Texas man, was reportedly shot and killed in the Oak Cliff area of Dallas after attempting to sell a cellphone on the Facebook Marketplace according to reporting from the Dallas Police Department.
Authorities reported in a release via DPDBeat that Alkhalaf was found suffering from a gunshot wound when police responded to a shooting report on November 8 at approximately 3:00 p.m. Central Time. The victim was transported to an area hospital by Dallas Fire Rescue where he later died.
On November 14, a U. S. Marshals Taskforce was assembled and arrested Amaya Medrano, 19 in connection to the murder, and four days later arrested 18-year-old Annika Aleman as well. Both have been charged with Capital Murder and are being held in the Dallas County Jail.
According to Fox News, the shooting took place near an Oak Cliff gas station and responding officers found Alkhalaf beside his pickup truck. FOX 4 reporters determined that the man was attempting to sell an iPhone15 to a buyer he had contacted via Facebook Marketplace. Surveillance camera footage showed him having a short conversation with a suspect and beginning to walk away, only to turn around and shoot Alkhalaf before fleeing on foot.
Police were able to identify the suspect as Medrano due to her easily identifiable facial and neck tattoos, police told the outlet. Investigators were later able to locate the stolen iPhone listed on the Marketplace by the same account that Alkhalaf was attempting to sell it to just three days later. The account was later linked to the second suspect Annika Aleman.
An affidavit obtained by Fox 4 showed that the cash and gun used in the crime were also linked to Aleman. "Her and Suspect Aleman had agreed to use the gun if necessary and only to point it but not shoot it if necessary to gain and maintain control of the phone," the affidavit said. "This demonstrates Suspect Aleman’s knowledge and involvement in the offense as she provided Suspect Medrano with the gun and buy money used in the offense."
The two women are now being held on $1 million bonds. The victim's family described Alkhalaf as a beloved husband, father, and grandfather. They also stressed his humility, and diligence saying we worked hard to support his family at home and abroad.
Dallas Police Senior Public Information Officer Corbin Rubinson warned the public in a statement to WFAA that it is important not to go to any “meet-ups” like these alone. “Trust your gut if it doesn't feel right, leave,” he told reporters. He advised the best places to meet for such online transactions are the many DPD patrol stations located throughout the Dallas metro area. “Take your phone be ready to dial 911 if you feel unsafe,” Rubinson added.
