AUSTIN, TEXAS - The medical director of the Texas Medical Board (TMB), Robert Bredt, filed for retirement on January 7, 2025, following being exposed as an employee of Planned Parenthood.
Bredt has served as the medical director of the TMB since 2012. It was recently discovered that before beginning his public role, Planned Parenthood South Texas employed him. Operation Rescue reports that Bredt’s resume indicates he was actively working for Planned Parenthood in 2011.
Operation Rescue President Troy Newman said, “This presents a shocking ethical conflict. And it explains why Operation Rescue’s complaints against shoddy abortion facilities and dangerously irresponsible abortionists in the state of Texas have fallen flat for more than a decade.”
“We submitted a number of complaints to the Texas Medical Board, which at first seemed interested in pursuing them, but then suddenly stopped and dropped almost everything. They gave no attention to the allegations that abortionist and sexual predator Doug Karpen was murdering babies born alive during abortions by twisting their heads off- even though four clinic workers came forward and were eyewitnesses and even photographed one of the victims,” Operation Rescue’s Senior Vice President Emeritus Cheryl Sullenger said.
A search of Karpen’s license shows he is still licensed in Texas. His license was renewed in August of 2024 and is currently active until October of 2025.
Upon discovering Bredt’s unethical dual employment, legal counsel for Operation Rescue, State Representative Briscoe Cain (R-TX), sent a letter on December 30, 2024, demanding “immediate termination of Bredt.”
On December 31, 2024, just one day after Representative Cain demanded that Bredt be terminated, State Representative Brian Harrison (TX-R) took to X to post Bredt’s resume and send a message to Texas Governor Greg Abbott to inform him of the risk of bias.
While echoing Representative Cain’s demand for termination, Representative Harrison, in his letter to the Governor, added, “Additionally, since Texas should be leading the fight against Planned Parenthood – not employing them – I also ask that you direct all state agencies to ensure there are no other Planned Parenthood officials employed by any state agency, including in advisory roles.”
Newman noted that “since Bredt worked for Planned Parenthood before he was hired by the medical board in 2012, it is certainly difficult to believe the state-funded agency was not aware of this blatant ethical breach.” He added, “I’m grateful for the work of Cain, Harrison, Attorney General Ken Paxton (R), and others in Texas who are working to clean up the swamp in the Lone Star State. I hope to see other states take note and do likewise.”
Texas is widely known for protecting unborn children. In 2016, Texas legislators removed Planned Parenthood from the state’s Medicaid program, limiting the amount of state and federal dollars that Planned Parenthood and affiliates can receive.
