Written by Dino Rossi, candidate for U.S Ambassador to Costa Rica
As a frequent traveler and someone who has spent considerable amount of time in Costa Rica, I can personally attest to the beauty of the country and, more importantly, the warmth and kindness of its people. Costa Rica is a longstanding friend of the United States, and it’s a place that is special to me. However, there is an urgent issue on the horizon that requires the attention of both nations—one that cannot be ignored for the sake of national security, law and order, and the safety of all citizens involved.
Costa Rica has become a key transit point for illegal migrants traveling toward the United States. This flow of people, particularly military-age men from nations such as Venezuela, China, and parts of the Middle East, poses a significant security threat to our country. Many of these individuals come from regions where anti-American rhetoric is common, and their presence on the way to the U.S. border should raise serious alarms.
Thankfully President Trump and our new border czar, Tom Homan understand this issue and willing to act.
The next U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica must be someone who understands the gravity of this issue and has the diplomatic skill to work with Costa Rican officials to halt this unchecked movement. It is crucial that this person is not just a major donor or someone whose spouse holds political influence, but a leader who can engage in tough conversations and build solutions to prevent the illegal transit of migrants through Costa Rica.
Under the current Biden administration, the U.S. has prioritized policies that have enabled, rather than halted, the flow of illegal immigration. The U.S. State Department even signed agreements aimed at “managing migration,” but these have only allowed more people to make their way through Costa Rica without consequence.
If you’re an American visiting Costa Rica, you’ll be required to show proof of a return ticket at immigration. But if you’re a migrant passing through on your way to the U.S., you’re allowed to proceed without such checks. This sends a dangerous message to those attempting to bypass legal immigration processes.
Costa Rica should not be left to shoulder this burden alone. While it may not be fully their fault that people are allowed to travel through their country, it’s clear that the Biden administration's lax policies have encouraged this migration. The U.S. should be pushing for stronger agreements with Costa Rica—ones that prioritize stopping the flow of illegal migrants, rather than simply “managing” it. These measures should align with the shared interests of both countries: ensuring the safety of our citizens and upholding the integrity of legal immigration processes.
The United States is a country that prides itself on its generosity, welcoming millions of new citizens and legal immigrants every year. But there is a distinct difference between those who seek to contribute to our society through legal channels and those who are attempting to circumvent the law. It is essential that we stop the flow of unvetted individuals who could pose security risks to American citizens.
As a former Washington State Senator and candidate for Governor, I was proud to receive the endorsements of law enforcement agencies because I have always stood by the principle of law and order. We have laws for a reason—they are meant to be followed and enforced. The unchecked movement of migrants through Costa Rica is a direct threat to public safety, and it’s time we act.
If we take decisive action now, we can protect both American citizens and the hardworking law enforcement officers who risk their lives daily to safeguard our communities. The next U.S. ambassador to Costa Rica has a pivotal role to play in making this happen. Let’s ensure they have the leadership and diplomatic tools necessary to address this crisis head-on.
America’s commitment to law and order, alongside our generosity to those who follow the legal process, is what makes us strong. But we must be vigilant. Working together with Costa Rica, we can put a stop to illegal migration, ensuring that both our nations are safer, stronger, and more secure for future generations.
