NEW YORK CITY, NY - Authorities confirmed that a three-year-old is recovering after fracturing her skill from being runover by a moped driver in the streets of the Bronx on Friday afternoon.
According to ABC7, the incident happened just after 1:00 p.m. in the Williamsbridge section of the Bronx on Friday, November 29th. Police said that the little girl, Mylah Rojas, was walking down the sidewalk on Holland Avenue near Burke Avenue when she was struck by a person riding a moped. The girl was immediately taken to Jacobi Hospital to be treated for her injuries.
The girl's mother, Mariel Rojas, said she is still in shock after what happened. She said, "He fell. Then he got off the scooter and walked toward us, but when he saw her face bleeding, that's when he left. She stepped down the step. I was right behind her and he just came out of nowhere and dragged her."
Rojas said that her little girl has a brain bleed and swollen eyes. She has a fracture in her left eye causing it to stay shut. She said that her daughter is also in and out of consciousness. She told the New York Post that after it happened her daughter was bleeding and "blood was everywhere" from the split in her forehead.
Her mother said that her daughter is doing a little better as the days go on. She said she is "talking, she's sitting up, she's coloring ... she's active, but then she complains of her eye being closed shut. She's in a lot of pain." The family does not know how long Mylah will remain hospitalized.
The mother said, "We're still waiting for results. It's a waiting game now. It's a brain injury, so we're just waiting to see what's going to happen." The man, who was wearing an orange jacket, black sweatpants, and black sandals during the crash walked away from the scene. Rojas said, "He limped away. I don't know if the scooter was damaged and he couldn't turn it on. I don't know."
Surveillance footage later shows the man limping while walking on a sidewalk without the orange jacket. Police are now asking the public for their help in identifying the man so that justice for the little girl can be served. Rojas said, "He needs to show his face and be responsible for what he did. I just want him to come to justice."
She added, "It could happen to someone else and it could be much worse. The city needs to do something about all these scooters in the streets. The city needs to step up and get this under control." The girl's family is praying for a full recovery ahead of the little girl's birthday next month. Her uncle shared his message to the man who left her bleeding on the street, saying, "Be responsible enough to come in and explain what happened."
Anyone with any information about the incident is encouraged to call the NYPD's Crime Stoppers Hotline at 1-800-577-8477.
