NORTH HAVEN, CT – A 21-year-old University of New Haven senior and hockey captain was killed earlier in October in a fatal collision reportedly caused by a wrong-way driver, with Homeland Security officials saying the driver at fault is a twice removed illegal alien from Mexico.
Connecticut State Police say the young college student, 21-year-old Ryan O’Shea, was heading southbound on Interstate 91 in New Haven in his Honda Accord on the evening of October 16 when the driver of a Chevy Silverado, identified as 31-year-old Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, hit him head-on while traveling northbound in the wrong lane.
Investigators say the impact threw O’Shea’s vehicle into another lane resulting in the vehicle being struck by two other drivers. O’Shea was reportedly declared deceased at the scene, whereas Carmona-Lopez reportedly suffered serious, life-threatening injuries, and was transported to an area hospital.
According to a press release from Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), Carmona-Lopez was removed from the United States twice over a decade earlier and illegally reentered the country at some point following his past deportation.
“In May 2013, Border Patrol arrested Carmona-Lopez after he illegally entered the country. He was issued an expedited removal and removed. He then illegally reentered - a felony - and was arrested again by Border Patrol. He was issued a final order of removal and later reentered at an unknown time and place,” ICE emphasized in the issued statement.
According to reports, O’Shea, who was originally from Stony Point, New York, was studying criminal justice with an emphasis on police science at the Connecticut-based university and had hopes of joining the NYPD after interning at the police agency this past summer.
Lorenzo Boyd, O’Shea’s academic advisor at the university, said in a statement, “Ryan wanted to go into public service in order to help others. He was engaging in the classroom and will be missed greatly.”
O’Shea also served as a captain on the university’s hockey team, with the team issuing a statement via Instagram sharing their collective grief over having lost one of their own as O’Shea had apparently been killed right after playing in a home game.
“Ryan embodied what it meant to be a Charger. His infectious personality and sense of humor lit up our locker room. He loved his teammates and we will all miss him dearly. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Ryan’s family & loved ones. Rest easy, brother, we love you,” the statement read in part.
