CALIFORNIA – Two recent officer-involved shootings out of California stemming from suspects allegedly weaponizing their vehicles against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents illustrate the escalating levels of violence agents face. Meanwhile, amid this heightened level of anti-ICE violence, Democrat officials within the state appear to be emboldening these sorts of violent acts.
An immigration enforcement operation in Ontario, California, resulted in gunfire on the morning of October 30, with officials saying an ICE agent opened fire on a man later identified as 23-year-old Carlos Jimenez after the suspect allegedly tried to reverse his vehicle into agents.
Officials say Jimenez literally used his vehicle in an attempt to obstruct a separate traffic stop conducted by ICE agents, with Jimenez then allegedly trying to run over ICE agents after he ignored orders to exit his vehicle.
Unfortunately, cases like the one involving Jimenez aren’t unfamiliar to ICE agents operating in California, as an October 21st incident in Los Angeles played out very similarly during an immigration enforcement effort. Federal authorities say 44-year-old Carlitos Ricardo Parias used his vehicle to ram into ICE agents’ vehicles who were attempting to arrest him via an administrative immigration warrant.
In line with the Jimenez case, Parias was also non-fatally shot during the incident, as well as a U.S. Marshal who suffered a ricochet wound on the hand. Homeland Security Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin noted these incidents are indicative of the escalating threats ICE agents are dealing with while carrying out their duties.
“ICE officers now face a 1,000% increase in assaults against them, including cars being used as weapons, and death threats against our agents are up 8,000%,” McLaughlin stated, adding, “This violence must end. Let me be clear: Anyone who assaults, impedes, obstructs, or threatens the lives of federal officers will be arrested and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.”
As attempts on ICE agents’ lives are playing out in real time across California, Democrat politicians within the state seem content with adding fuel to the proverbial fire with stunts like the recently announced effort to create a web-based ICE tracking tool available to the public.
During an October 20th press conference in Los Angeles, Mayor Karen Bass and Democrat Congressman Robert Garcia shared the news of this novel ICE tracking website that is underway, with Rep. Garcia saying during the press conference that locals should “record” ICE agents and share gathered intel “to local groups on the ground.”
California Democrats like former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi have also joined in on the anti-ICE bandwagon, with the congresswoman claiming that state and local police in California could arrest ICE agents if they believe the agents violated state laws while carrying out their duties.
Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche was quick to shut down the notion conveyed by Rep. Pelosi regarding the arresting of ICE agents, sending a letter to the congresswoman and other notable Democrat figures in California informing them that any attempt to arrest an ICE agent is both “futile” and “illegal.”
