LAS VEGAS, NV - Two people have been arrested and a third is still at large in Las Vegas following a deadly attack on a homeless encampment in the city. Cristobal Omar Perez, 31, and his girlfriend, 21-year-old Kylee Au Young, were placed under arrest after the shooting on December 1 near U.S. 95 killed two homeless men and injured three others.
According to KLAS, the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) has alleged that Perez was the suspected gunman while Au Young was another suspect in the shooting. The two victims were identified as Timothy Brenton and Ashley Burrell. The LVMPD told KLAS they believe Perez, Young, and another unidentified suspect planned the shooting.
LVMPD Lt. Jason Johannsen told a Thursday press conference, "What we know now is this was clearly a targeted planned attack on these specific unhoused individuals that were living there in that encampment."
Johannsen added, "All signs indicate that there was some sort of dispute between a relative of Cristobal who lives in the area to the north of where this shooting took place and then as a result of this dispute this shooting occurred."
The police allege that Perez was dropped off at a neighborhood to the north of the encampment where the shooting happened. He then waited for a black SUV to pick him up, according to KSNV. The officers said that Perez parked the SUV on Sandhill road and then walked toward the encampment and immediately opened fire.
Johansson told reporters that the suspect “indiscriminately shot them in cold blood.”
He then allegedly fled to a getaway car positioned across the street to meet Au Young who was waiting for him. The department posted surveillance video of the suspect still at large, as well as their vehicle.
At the time of the incident, it was reported as a mass shooting, according to RawsAlerts, who wrote, "Law enforcement and other authorities are currently on the scene of a mass shooting in Las Vegas, Nevada, where five homeless individuals were shot, resulting in two fatalities. Three others have been transported to the hospital for injuries. Nearby streets are closed as the police investigate, and the suspect is still at large."
KLAS reported that Perez and Au Young are both facing charges of murder and battery with a deadly weapon citing reports from the LVMPD.
Reporting from Fox5 stated that all five victims were transported to UMC Trauma where one victim was pronounced dead with a second in critical condition who would later also perish. The three other victims were listed in stable condition.
