EL PASO, TX - El Paso Sector Chief Patrol Agent Anthony S. Good told reporters Friday that the U.S. Border Patrol's (BP) El Paso Sector has noted a "significant rise" in the number of attacks against its agents and is taking steps to warn that the consequences for assaulting a federal officer are severe.

As reported by KTSM, Good warned, "Assaulting federal agents is not just a crime; it is an affront to our principles of justice and the safety of our nation — the brave men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol and all our law enforcement partners that work alongside with us safeguarding our nation’s borders."

He continued, “We will not tolerate any harm to the well-being of those dedicated to protecting others. Our law enforcement partners stand with us in bringing those responsible to justice.”

El Paso Sector BP informed the outlet that it is working with the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office very closely to bring prosecution against anyone who assaults the BP's agents.

In a related news release, BP stated, "As the influx of migrants illegally crossing the border into the United States continues, the frequency of attacks on our federal agents has also increased. Violent confrontations occur when migrants and smugglers attempt to evade law enforcement. Since the beginning of Fiscal Year 2024, 66 El Paso Sector Border Patrol Agents have been assaulted. During Fiscal Year 2023, 104 agents were assaulted."

According to the release, in addition to assaults that saw agents attacked with "fists, feet, teeth, firearms, knives, vehicles, and rocks, along with other items used as weapons to purposely inflict harm," at least one agent was forcibly ripped off of an ATV and numerous vehicles have been extensively damaged with thrown rocks.

The agents have also faced serious attempts on their lives with at least one agent in the Lordsburg, TX area shot twice in the torso, only surviving thanks to his bulletproof vest.

In a post to Facebook, Good added that the assault of federal agents is "not just a crime, but an affront to our principles of justice and the safety of our nation."

Good added, "The brave men and women of the U.S. Border Patrol and the National Guard perform their duties to safeguard our national borders. Not only do they detect and identify threats, but they also perform hundreds of rescues for stranded individuals in the unforgiving desert environment. Those who commit these crimes will swiftly receive the full penalties of the United States' law."
