The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has recently taken a significant step in the realm of cybersecurity, unsealing an indictment against Alireza Shafie Nasab, a 39-year-old Iranian national.

Nasab is accused of playing a central role in a multi-year cyber campaign aimed at compromising U.S. governmental and private entities. The charges shed light on the intricate details of the cyber-enabled operations that targeted key entities, including the U.S. Departments of the Treasury and State, defense contractors supporting Department of Defense (DOD) programs, and two New York-based companies.

Nasab, who claimed to be a cybersecurity specialist, was associated with a company called Mahak Rayan Afraz. However, investigations have revealed that Mahak Rayan Afraz was not a legitimate cybersecurity firm but rather a front for the cyber activities orchestrated by Nasab and his collaborators.

The charges brought against Nasab are grave, encompassing conspiracy to commit computer fraud, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and aggravated identity theft. If found guilty on all counts, Nasab could potentially face a maximum prison sentence of 47 years.

The cyber campaign orchestrated by Nasab and his group utilized a variety of tactics, with spear-phishing being a notable method. This involved tricking email recipients into clicking on malicious links, leading to the infection of over 200,000 victim devices. Many of these compromised devices contained sensitive or classified defense information, indicating the severity of the cyber intrusion.

Additionally, the group engaged in social engineering, with Nasab and his associates masquerading as individuals, often women, to gain the trust of victims and deploy malware onto their computers.

Nasab's role in the cyber scheme went beyond executing attacks. While ostensibly working for Mahak Rayan Afraz, he played a critical role in procuring infrastructure for the campaign. Notably, Nasab used the stolen identity of a real person to register a server and email accounts, adding a layer of complexity to their operations.

Despite the charges, Nasab remains at large, prompting the U.S. State Department to announce a substantial reward of up to $10 million for information leading to his identification or location. This sizable reward underscores the gravity with which U.S. authorities view Nasab's alleged actions and their commitment to bringing him to justice.

The announcement of Nasab's charges was made by U.S. Attorney Damian Williams for the Southern District of New York. Williams, along with other officials, highlighted the inherent threat posed by cyber intrusion schemes to national security. The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has actively contributed to the investigation, urging individuals to adopt proper cybersecurity measures to reduce vulnerability to malicious actors.

This legal action against Nasab and the associated entities is part of a broader effort by the U.S. government to address cyber threats systematically and hold those responsible accountable for compromising the security of computer systems. As the investigation unfolds, further updates will be provided to ensure the public stays informed about this evolving and significant cybersecurity situation.

“As alleged, Alireza Shafie Nasab participated in a cyber campaign using spear phishing and other hacking techniques to infect more than 200,000 victim devices, many of which contained sensitive or classified defense information,” U.S. Attorney Damian Williams stated.

“Cyber intrusion schemes such as the one alleged threaten our national security, and I’m proud of our law enforcement partners and the career prosecutors of this Office for using innovative technologies and investigative measures to disrupt and track down these cybercriminals.”
