CHARLOTTE, NC - A college student has been arrested and charged following an incident that occurred at UNC Charlotte back in September. The student, identified as 19-year-old Alexander Michael Evanoff, allegedly recorded himself in a sexual encounter inside a dorm room and then shared the footage in his fraternity's Snapchat group chat.
Evanoff was arrested on Monday, October 19, according to jail records reviewed by PEOPLE. He has been charged with two counts of felony secret peeping and disclosure of private images, a law that includes sexual conduct and "naked human parts." Evanoff is accused of using his cell phone to make the recording on September 19 while he was in a woman's dorm room at UNC at Charlotte's Hunt Hall building.
Later that day, Evanoff posted the video in a Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity Snapchat group chat containing approximately 32 members, according to a warrant reviewed by the New York Post.
Two people reported seeing the video in the Snapchat group. When the woman in the video learned of the recording, she told police that she confronted Evanoff about it, asking him if he distributed the recording to "appear cool," authorities said. "Evanoff reportedly responded affirmatively and apologized,” the affidavit states.
During an interview with investigators, Evanoff "admitted to recording and distributing the video without requesting [the woman’s] permission and acknowledged that its distribution would be embarrassing and humiliating to her,” per the affidavit. He also allegedly told detectives that he didn't request or obtain the victim's permission to create or distribute the video.
UNC Charlotte said in a statement that Evanoff "is not currently enrolled at the University," adding, "The alleged conduct in this case, if true, is reprehensible. It is not what we expect or will tolerate from members of our campus community."
“All of our cases are evaluated in accordance with applicable university policies. Any student who breaks the law is not only responsible for criminal charges, but may also be subject to the University’s disciplinary process, which includes sanctions up to and including expulsion."
Evanoff was released one day after his arrest on a $10,000 bond. He has a probable cause hearing scheduled for November 5.
