LAS VEGAS, NV – A 19-year-old man arrested on murder and robbery charges allegedly told Las Vegas Metro Police that the fatal shooting of a 59-year-old man earlier in April was not on the evening agenda when he and two other individuals organized a meetup to play video games together.
Local authorities in Las Vegas responded to a report of a shooting that occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on April 10th where first responders discovered the body of a man, later identified as 59-year-old Victor Powe, dead from apparent gunshot wounds inside of his vehicle.
Investigators made a break in the case when 19-year-old Elijah Harris contacted authorities saying he wanted to talk about the incident but admitted to being “scared” to discuss the details, as he would later allegedly admit to investigators to being an unwilling participant in the fatal shooting.
According to authorities, Harris told investigators that he and two of his friends came to his apartment to “hang out, smoke weed, and play video games,” but he was taken aback by one of his friends who apparently showed up at his apartment with a rifle tucked in his pants that Harris explicitly told the person to not bring over.
As the evening carried on between the trio, Harris reportedly told police they’d ran out of weed and one of the two friends claimed they knew a guy who could supply some more, referring to the man as his “plug,” and that the drugs would be delivered by the plug’s runner, Powe. Harris allegedly told investigators that his two friends had asked if he was sure he wanted to ride along to pick up the drugs, and Harris reportedly agreed.
Surveillance video obtained by authorities nearby the scene of the incident reportedly showed two men approaching Powe’s vehicle while a third individual stood off to the side serving as a “lookout.” Audio from the obtained video reportedly caught one of the suspects telling Powe to exit the vehicle, with the second suspect armed with the rifle eventually opening fire while Powe tried to drive away before crashing his vehicle and succumbing to his sustained injuries.
According to the statement Harris allegedly gave to police, he observed his two friends approaching the vehicle and witnessed what appeared to be a brief conversation before the suspect armed with a rifle opened fire on the victim. Harris was reportedly the first to come back to his apartment following the incident, with the two other suspects later arriving and claiming they “messed up” and that the situation “wasn’t supposed to go like that.”
Harris reportedly maintained to investigators during his statement that he wasn’t aware of any plan to rob or kill the victim, but reportedly conceded that he “should have known something was up.” The other two suspects have yet to be publicly named by authorities as of this writing.
Following his statement, Harris was booked into the Clark County Detention Center on charges of open murder, attempted robbery, and conspiracy to commit robbery. His next scheduled court appearance is slated for May 20th.
