Virginia Gov. Abigail Spanberger Caught Lying About Turning State Into Sanctuary for Illegal Aliens

RICHMOND, VA - Virginia Governor Abigail Spanberger (D) ran as a moderate in last November’s gubernatorial race, and naive Virginia voters bought it. However, as soon as she was sworn in, she took a harder left turn than a NASCAR driver at Bristol Motor Speedway. Now, a bit too little and far too late, Virginia voters are turning against her.

With her poll numbers at a record low for a three-month governor, Spanberger is squarely on defense and has taken to implementing the Democratic Party playbook when they’re outed as bold-faced liars; she’s playing stupid and claiming that what Virginians (and the rest of the US) are seeing with their own eyes isn’t happening.

Fox News Digital reports that Spanberger, who has dodged questions about her sudden about-face on numerous issues from gun control to sanctuary state policies, has decided to crawl out from under her rock and attempt to defend (or deny) her policies.

Spanberger, who has been slammed for undoing former Republican Gov. Glenn Youngkin’s 287(g) agreement with the Department of Homeland Security, actually came out and said that “Virginia is not a sanctuary state–full stop.” “Full stop” is a code word for “I’m lying my ass off.”

Virginia has been the scene of numerous crimes attributed to illegal alien offenders, some particularly heinous. Yet even when the offenders are caught, Virginia’s light-on-criminal policies have them back out on the street, sometimes in a matter of hours.

“There’s a lot of misinformation out there. Certainly, everything that you might read on Twitter [uh, it’s X, Abby] is not real, but it’s actually pretty outrageous some of the things that have been reported along the way,” addressing an executive order she issued on "immigration enforcement cooperation.”

She claimed that her order was that state agencies, including the Virginia State Police, could not put personnel under DHS supervision.

“And I feel very strongly about that because [VSP] is a top-notch law enforcement agency. And I don’t think it is responsible for us or me as governor or the Commonwealth of Virginia to put Virginia State Police under the supervision or direction of ICE.”

Conversely, in neighboring West Virginia, law enforcement personnel who are nominated, trained, certified, and authorized have the authority to conduct delegated immigration officer functions under a 287(g) agreement. When officials meet those qualifications, they may then be allowed to carry out immigration enforcement functions under the supervision or direction of ICE.

Spanberger also said that she has not banned Virginia police officers from cooperating with ICE, nor banned localities from entering into their own 287(g) agreements with DHS.

"That is not correct. My predecessor said they had to. I simply said I was not forcing them to,” she said.

Fox News Digital noted that, while that may be true, a bill from Sen. Saddam Salim awaiting her signature would ban agencies from entering into 287(g) agreements. Wonder if she’ll sign it?

Salim’s bill would ban Virginia law enforcement agencies from entering into 287(g) agreements unless an officer receives a judicial warrant, subpoena, or detainer for a suspected illegal alien signed by a judge. That contravenes federal immigration law, which requires no such provision.

Spanberger said if ICE asks an agency for help and has a warrant related to the suspect’s actions, the Commonwealth will be happy to assist.

A Washington Post poll shows that Spanberger has the lowest net favorability at this point in her term of any governor dating back to the 1990s.

As if she could not get any more tone-deaf, Spanberger said the following:

“I would say if everybody hated me, why is everybody putting my face on their mailers for the referendum [on] question No. 1?” Spanberger said.

Spanberger’s “face” is being used by opponents to the Commonwealth’s attempt to redraw its congressional maps. They do not appear to be a show of support.

That question is a gerrymandering bill that would take a state with over 40% Republicans and put every House seat save one in a Democrat-leaning district. This was an about-face for Spanberger, who opposed a 2019 referendum currently in effect but supports the new redraw.

Spanberger pointed to a 17-point swing in her election from that of Youngkin.

“What matters to me in the end is what I am delivering for people. I knew when I was first elected that I would have a big target on me,” she said.

Her opponent, Republican Winsome Sears, warned voters that Spanberger was a chameleon and would change her stripes if elected. Sears was apparently a prophet.

On Thursday, ICE Director Todd Lyons was asked about Spanberger, and he told Fox News that she should “read the headlines” about what’s going on in Fairfax and elsewhere before ceasing cooperation with ICE.

“I never thought in my whole career that someone would campaign on going against law enforcement, right… Elected officials like the governor want to give me a call and work with us, that’s what we want.”

Spanberger is just another far-left Democrat who ran as a moderate and, when elected, moved far to the left…just like Joe Biden, for example.

When will voters learn?
