Virtue-signaling Colorado 'assault' weapons ban will have ZERO impact on murders in the state

DENVER, CO - Liberals love to bloviate about so-called “assault” weapons, painting them as “weapons of war.” The only thing they know about such weapons is that they are black and scary-looking. Aside from that, most liberals couldn’t differentiate between an AR-15 and a Bushmaster hunting rifle. More accurately, they don’t realize that aside from physical appearances, they are the same weapon.

Colorado, which not too long ago was considered a purple if not red state, is proposing an “assault weapons” ban, SB25-003, that is being called one of the most restrictive firearm prohibition bills in the country. The bill, if passed, would impose a sweeping ban on the sale, purchase, transfer, and manufacture of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that can accept detachable magazines, with the only exception being for law enforcement.

According to We The Second Colorado, the proposed bill would impose a “sweeping ban on the sale, purchase, transfer, and manufacture of semi-automatic rifles and shotguns that can accept detachable magazines,” with the only exception being for law enforcement. While other states, such as California and New Jersey, have passed similar laws, they include carve-outs for rifles without pistol grips or other certain cosmetic features.

In the case of SB25-003, it applies to any rifle that accepts detachable magazines. It also applies a blanket ban to shotguns that accept detachable magazines. Those operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide actions are exempted.

The bill also targets gas-operated semi-automatic pistols that use gas to automatically reload after firing if they also have detachable magazines. The proposed legislation also outlaws bump stocks and other rapid-fire trigger devices.

The bill also gives the Colorado Attorney General wide latitude to define further what We The Second calls “often nuanced and contradictory language.”

As the anti-gun left typically does, they are gaslighting the public about the benefits of such a ban, claiming it will reduce violent crime and shootings. However, FBI crime data blows that rationale entirely out of the water.

According to the FBI’s Uniform Crime Report data, the majority of Colorado’s firearm-related murders are committed with handguns, not so-called “assault weapons” proposed to be banned under the bill.

For example, in 202, handguns were used in 141 out of 293 murders, rifles were used in 8, and a shotgun was used once. Meanwhile, the data showed that knives and other edged weapons were used in 40 murders, while hands, fists, or feet were used in 14.

In 2019, meanwhile, handguns accounted for 83 out of 209 murders, whereas rifles and shotguns combined accounted for only 8. While the number of murders increased by 40%, the use of rifles and shotguns remained the same. In other words, Colorado legislators are banning a tool for a virtually nonexistent problem. Rifles and shotguns are primarily used by hunters, for rural self-defense and sport target shooting.

As We The Second Colorado points out, the virtue-signaling “assault weapons” ban will make liberals feel like they are doing something. Still, the assertion that it will significantly reduce murder rates in Colorado is laughable.

Recall this is the same state that is home to the city of Aurora, where the state’s sanctuary policies embraced by the same legislators have allowed a criminal Venezuelan gang, Tren de Aragua, to lay siege on portions of that city. Now, by proposing this legislation, they will, in essence, be holding Coloradans defenseless against a ruthless gang of foreign invaders who, it is guaranteed, will not abide by such laws.

Suppose Colorado legislators were genuinely concerned about crime and the murder rate. In that case, they’d allow constitutional carry so that Colorado citizens can defend themselves instead of passing a virtue-signaling assault weapons ban that will have zero impact on crime rates. In fact, it might make them worse.
