LACY, WA - A jury reached a verdict in the trial of a father and mother who were accused of strangling their daughter in an attempted "honor killing."

A jury found 44-year-old Ihsan Ali not guilty of second-degree attempted murder and first-degree assault. However, he was found guilty of second-degree and fourth-degree assault, and unlawful punishment, FOX13 reported.

The mother, 40-year-old Zahraa Ali, was found guilty of violating a protective order, but not guilty of second-degree attempted murder, second-degree assault and second-degree burglary.

Ihsan was sentenced to 14 months for second-degree assault, 12 months for unlawful imprisonment, and 182 days for fourth-degree assault, according to the DailyMail.

He was also ordered to complete a parenting class, do 18 months of custody service, and have no contact with his daughter for 10 years.

The judge said she gave him the maximum sentences because of the brutality of the crime.

She said of his assault on his daughter's boyfriend: "He victimized a defenseless young man for no reason and it is Isiah's good fortune that he was not more badly injured."

The mother was accused of attacking her daughter in a similar manner, and was also present during the attack that the father carried out. The judge sentenced her to 364 days in jail, with the last 84 suspended, for breaching the restraining order.

She already served 280 days in pretrial detention and was released on July 31st. Ali was captured on video appearing to choke his 17-year-old daughter on the ground outside Timberline High School in October 2024.

The assault happened after the teen ran away from home, claiming her parents planned to forcefully send her to Iraq to marry an older man. Multiple witnesses of the attack described seeing the daughter's eyes roll back as her father placed her in a choke hold.

The victim's 16-year-old boyfriend attempted to intervene and was allegedly punched by the father, with another bystander eventually able to get the daughter to break away.

Court documents also state the daughter previously reported abuse by both her father and mother prior to the incident.

During the sentencing, the daughter read an emotional victim impact statement, calling her father a "monster" who tried to kill her with his own hands.

"You think I'm a disgusting human being, well I think you're a disgusting monster," she said.

"How can you call yourself a father, you tried to kill me, my dad tried to kill me with his own hands, do you have no love for me? I know you were smiling when you choked me. I'm going to pray for you to stay in jail and die."

The daughter also spoke to Zahraa in her statement, calling her a bad mother who did nothing to save her from her father's abuse at home.

"My mom saw me almost pass away right in front of her own eyes and didn't help me at all, didn't say if I was OK ... didn't even try to be there for me," she said.

The daughter is now in extended foster care, and since she is now an adult, cannot be compelled to return to her parents.
