TROTMAN, OH- NBC-4 in Dayton reports that a wild police chase in the city saw a female pedestrian struck by the suspect vehicle, the suspect shooting a long gun at pursuing officers, a police vehicle getting crushed by the same vehicle, and police shooting at the suspect after he crashed.
The scene started to unfold Monday morning at around 10:54 am when Trotman, Ohio emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a woman had been struck by a white pickup truck,” officials said at a 3:00 pm news conference held by the Trotwood and Dayton police chiefs and the Montgomery County Sheriff.
Responding officers found the woman in the roadway, at which point the suspect vehicle drove past officers, with the driver pointing a long gun at them from the truck’s window. That began a chase heading east on US Route 35, with the suspect swerving through oncoming traffic.
As the suspect continued on Route 35, other agencies joined the chase. Trotwood Police Chief Erik Wilson said that officers deployed stop sticks to puncture the suspect vehicle’s tires, however, the driver continued driving on US 35, where the suspect pulled a U-turn and headed back west.
Wilson said after turning around, the suspect “began firing at officers from his moving vehicle.” At the intersection of US 35 and Liscum Drive, the suspect drove across all lanes of traffic and crashed head-on into cruisers driven by a Trotwood officer and sheriff’s deputy’s cars. While the sheriff’s car was empty, an officer was inside the police cruiser, which ended up underneath the pickup truck.
Multiple shots were fired at the suspect, but there were no reports of gunshot injuries. The Trotwood police officer, who was not identified, had to be extricated from his vehicle by emergency crews and was transported to a local hospital, where his condition is unknown, however, he is expected to survive.
Wilson said the female pedestrian was not seriously injured, noting her injuries were not “life-threatening.” The suspect was also hospitalized and also remained unidentified.
Speaking of his officer, Wilson said, “They’re [the hospital] taking good care of him at this time…It was a pretty horrendous crash, as I’m pretty sure all of you have seen.”
Police said the female pedestrian and the truck driver were somehow related, but they were not married.
Wilson said that no other details would be provided beyond what authorities announced at the news conference, noting that the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation has taken the lead on the case.
US 35 was shut down for hours after the crash and subsequent investigation, however, it has since reopened.
