ATHENS-CLARKE COUNTY, GA- If ever there was a case where the suspect deserved the death penalty, it was the horrific murder of college student Laken Riley, 22, who was abducted while jogging at the University of Georgia, raped and bludgeoned to death by an illegal alien on Feb. 22, 2024. However, the now-former woke district attorney, Deborah Gonzalez, did not see it that way.
Last week, the murderer, whom we won’t identify because he doesn’t merit additional publicity, was found guilty by a judge and was sentenced to life in prison without parole, the Post Millennial reported. Unfortunately, his name is mentioned in the X posts found below.
What was Gonzalez’s rationale for not seeking the death penalty? She said it was important that the case of Laken’s murder needed to “transcend political considerations.” In other words, she didn’t want it to look bad for the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats.
According to Newsweek, Gonzalez never sought the death penalty in any case in her courtroom. Copies of her policies that were made public read:
“Cases which are legally eligible for the death penalty are eligible for sentences of life without parole and life with parole eligibility after serving thirty years. Both of these sentences constitute very substantial punishment. Decisions to seek the sentence of life without parole are a sentence of death in prison.”
Sadly, Laken Riley never had the chance to determine when or how she might die.
In addition, Gonzalez’s policies stated her office “take[s] into account collateral consequences to undocumented defendants” during cases against illegal aliens.
Gonzalez’s decision not to seek the death penalty against Laken’s killer, who was a member of the violent Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua. He entered the United States in Texas in 2022 and ended up in New York City. He was flown, at government expense, to Georgia and then ended up murdering Laken Riley in cold blood.
Georgia lawmakers and others slammed the decision not to seek the death penalty against the suspect:
State Rep. Houston Gaines, a Republican, posted on X:
Journalist Jack Posobiec wrote:
GOP Georgia State Sen. Colton Moore called for the Georgia Attorney General to step in to intervene and demand the death penalty for Lake RIley’s killer:
According to prosecutors, Laken Riley fought for her life for 18 minutes while the suspect attempted to raper her, according to the New York Post. On the morning of her murder, Laken sent a text to her mother, Allyson Phillips, that read: Good morning, about to go for a run. Are you free to talk?” She also tried to call her mom at 9:03 a.m. but didn't hear back. Only seven minutes later, she was attacked and never heard from again.
The suspect was found guilty on all counts by Judge H. Patrick Haggard, including malice murder, three counts of felony murder, kidnapping with bodily injury, aggravated assault with the intent to rape, aggravated battery, obstruction of a 911 call, tampering with evidence, and a “peeping tom” count.
Gonzalez paid for her “progressivism” with her career. The New York Post reported earlier this month that Republican Kalki Yalamanchili pummeled her in her reelection bid by a margin of 60% to 40%.
