WASHINGTON, D.C. - Ryan Michael "Reily" English, 24, a Massachusetts man armed with knives and Molotov cocktails, was intercepted by Capitol police officers and arrested on Monday near the Capitol Building when he told an officer that he intended to kill several leading Republican officials, including House Speaker Mike Johnson, Scott Bessent, who was confirmed as Secretary of the Treasury, and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth.

According to reporting from The New York Times, an affidavit filed by a special agent with the Capitol Police revealed that English encountered an officer near an entrance on the South side of the Capitol building and revealed his intentions. He was placed under arrest and searched leading officers to find knives, a lighter and vodka bottles with rags in his pockets.

The affidavit stated, “English’s thoughts were to use the small bottles of vodka to start fires and later to wrap them in rags soaked in alcohol, light them and throw them at Bessent’s feet.” English also reportedly planned to stab Bessent if he were able to approach the Secretary.

According to The Post Millennial, a letter was found in the suspect’s back pocket which read in part, “Judith dear god I am so sorry. You must understand I can feel myself dying slowly b/c of my heart. This is terrible but I cant do nothing while nazis kill my sisters. I love you. This is awful. Im so sorry. I love u. Please stay alive and heal. you can. you are strong enough. F*ck them for pushing us so far. you dont deserve this. Im so sorry for lying and plotting and lying. Please survive [7 hearts]."

The outlet noted that English left his home in Massachusetts Sunday with the stated intent of killing "'Nazi' Secretary of Defense, Peter Hegseth, and/or the Speaker of the House, Mike Johnson, and/or burning down the Heritage Foundation."

The affidavit stated that English was convinced he would have to kill at least three police officers in order to reach Bessent and “expressed acceptance and content with the possibility of suicide by cop.”

As noted by independent journalist Mario Nawfal, this is the latest incident in a pattern of over fifty weapons that have been confiscated on the Capitol grounds since January of last year.

As previously reported by Law Enforcement Today, a security failure at the Capitol complex saw a man successfully smuggle a 9mm handgun into the building during a tour. Another man was arrested inside the visitor’s center on January 8 armed with a machete and three knives, according to the Capitol Police.
