'Zero remorse': Mississippi teenager who fatally shot own mother sentenced to life in prison

BRANDON, MS - A Mississippi teen who shot and killed her own mother and wounded her stepfather will spend the rest of her life in prison.

Carly Gregg, 15, recieved her life sentence in a Friday hearing, according to Fox News. A jury earlier found Gregg guilty on charges of murder, aggravated assault, and tampering with evidence. Gregg was observed on a home surveillance camera carrying a .357 Magnum revolver on the day of the March 19 shooting, before the shot that killed 40-year-old Ashley Smylie was heard on the recording. Gregg shot her stepfather, Heath Smylie, when he arrived at the family's Brandon, Mississippi home.

Rankin County, Mississippi prosecutor Kathryn Newman cited Gregg's alleged bearing throughout the trial, arguing that the youth showed "zero remorse" throughout the course of the case.

Gregg openly sobbed as the jury announced its guilty verdicts on all charges, according to the New York Post. Gregg's defense made arguments related to the youth's mental health state during the trial. The defendant at one point rejected a plea deal offered by prosecutors, instead attempting to utilize an insanity defense in court.

The killing was spurred by Gregg's mother discovering that her daughter had been using marijuana from one of the youth's friends. The victim seized vape pens from Gregg's room hours before the shooting.

After fatally shooting her mother, Gregg texted Heath Smylie on her first victim's home- attempting to lure her stepfather to the residence for slaughter. The youth was recorded using her mother's phone, just after the first shooting, on home surveillance camera footage.

Gregg also asked a friend to come to the house, asking her if she had ever "seen a dead body" when she arrived- stating her mother was inside.

Heath Smylie described being ambushed at the front door of the family home in his Tuesday testimony.

"The gun went off in my face before the door was even three to four inches wide open, and everything kind of went pretty fast from there. The gun flashed in my face, it went off two more times, but my hand was on the gun after the first shot, and I twisted it from Carly."

Gregg's stepfather spoke of his ongoing relationship with the defendant, claiming that he speaks with the convicted murderer "every day" and describing her as a "sweet little girl" in testimony. Heath Smylie stated his belief that Gregg has no recollection of the fatal shooting in his appearance.

Gregg's sentence precludes the chance of parole, according to TMZ.
