WASHINGTON, D.C. - On Tuesday, March 4th, during President Trump's address to Congress, a 13-year-old boy who has survived cancer earned a standing ovation after the president officially swore him in as a member of the Secret Service.
According to Fox News, DJ Daniel stole the show during Trump's address, getting a standing ovation from nearly all in attendance — minus many Democrats. Trump told the crowd, "Joining us in the gallery tonight is a young man who truly loves our police. His name is DJ Daniel. He is 13-years-old and he has always dreamed of becoming a police officer. But, in 2018, DJ was diagnosed with brain cancer. The doctors gave him five months at most to live. That was more than six years ago."
Trump explained that Daniel and his dad, who was in the crowd and held him up at one point during Trump's remarks, have been on a "quest" to make his dream of becoming a police officer come true and explained that he has been made an honorary member of local police departments. Trump then surprised Daniel with the news that his dream was becoming a reality on an even bigger stage.
Trump said, "Tonight, DJ, we're going to do you the biggest honor of them all. I am asking our new Secret Service Director, Sean Curran, to officially make you an agent of the United States." Curran then walked over to Daniel and presented him with a customized Secret Service badge. The crowd started chanting the young boy's name and Trump said, "Thank you, DJ." After receiving his badge, Daniel leaned over and hugged the Secret Service Director.
According to the Daily Wire, during and after the swearing in of Daniel, those in attendance took to social media. Dana Loesch wrote, "Honorary Secret Service, with a badge and everything. This is awesome. His surprised sweet face." Meghan McCain, daughter of the late Senator John McCain, who died of brain cancer, wrote, "This is the first time I can remember crying during a state of the union. Thank you President Trump. This is so beautiful. Anyone who has been impacted by brain cancer knows how special this is."
Jason Howerton wrote, "President @RealDonaldTrump just appointed a child with brain cancer whose dream is to become a police officer as an official Secret Service agent. THIS SPEECH ROCKS!!!" Former White House Press Secretary Ari Fleischer wrote, "If the Ds can't clap for a beautiful 13-year-old boy who wants to become a cop, there's something really wrong with them."
After he hugged the Secret Service Director, Daniel turned to congratulate another guest, Jason Hartley, whose late father was a sheriff's deputy, after Trump announced that he had been admitted to West Point. Daniel was diagnosed with brain cancer at six and has undergone more than a dozen surgeries since.
