LAKEWOOD, WA - Authorities confirmed that residents were ordered to evacuate the area after a suspect barricaded himself inside of a building for several hours. According to FOX 13, the initial announcement came on social media at 10:35 a.m. on Wednesday, January 22nd with a map showing the area that needed to be evacuated.
The Lakewood Police Department (LPD) made the initial announcement and according to the Pierce County Sheriff's Office (PCSO), the suspect attempted to escape the building seveal hours later, around 5:53 p.m., when shots were fired between him and officers. The suspect was hit by gunfire and taken to the hospital in critical condition.
Authorities said that around 9:07 a.m., officers responded to reports of a suspicious person, possibly a burglary suspect, near the Pick and Pull at the corner of 112th Street South and Steel Street South. While officers were in route to the area, the suspect scaled a razor-wire fence onto Joint Base Lewis-McChord (JBLM) property and ran north through a field toward a business.
As officers arrived on scene, the suspect entered the business. Around 9:21 a.m., LPD officers were advised that shots were fired inside the building and people inside fled. As of 11:30 a.m., the suspect was the only person known to be inside of that building. As of this writing, it is unknown if any officers or others were injured during the incident. The identity of the suspect has not been released and the investigation remains ongoing.
In a separate incident, an hours-long standoff ended with an arrest at a Santa Maria, California, apartment complex. According to KSBY, the suspect was arrested on Sunday night, January 19th, after a six-hour standoff with police. Authorities with the Santa Monica Police Department (SMPD) said that officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1000 block of W. Boone Street for a report of a man armed with a knife.
The suspect, identified as 45-year-old Michael Achterberg, had reportedly been causing disturbances in the apartment complex over a span of a couple days and allegedly tried to assault another resident in the parking lot with a large knife.
When officers tried to make contact with Achterberg, he barricaded himself inside his apartment and threatened officers. SMPD's Crisis Negotiations Team attempted to negotiate with him, however, officials said that he remained uncooperative and the SWAT team was called in. Some nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution.
Around 9:15 p.m., after officers deployed less-lethal measures, including chemical agent, Achterberg surrendered and was taken into custody without further incident. He is facing charges of assault with a deadly weapon and an unrelated misdemeanor bench warrant. He remains in custody at the Santa Barbara County Northern Beach Jail with a bail of $57,500.
