UNION TOWNSHIP, NJ - On Wednesday, April 1, New Jersey State Troopers rescued a bear cub from a ditch along the side of a major interstate highway in northern New Jersey.
Troopers from the Perryville station responded shortly before 1:40 p.m. to milepost 12.2 on I-78 eastbound in Union Township, the Associated Press (AP) reported. The cub was alone, officials confirmed, and was soon safely secured. Troopers took the cub back to the police barracks, where it was later turned over to staffers with the state's Environmental Protection Department, who are caring for the animal.
It is unclear how the cub ended up in the ditch or how long it had been there before it was spotted. "Thanks to the swift response of the troopers, the cub is now safe and receiving the attention he needs," police said in a statement, NBC10 reported.
Photos of the rescue quickly spread online, with many people sharing reactions to the cub's small size and appearance, according to Fox News. "He's under arrest for being too cute," one user commented. Others praised troopers for stepping in to help and ensuring it was placed in proper care.
