TUSCALOOSA, AL - A 20-year-old man is facing a felony murder charge after authorities say his alleged accomplice was fatally shot during a robbery gone wrong in Tuscaloosa on Saturday night, AL.com reported.
According to Tuscaloosa authorities, a 25-year-old man was targeted in a robbery that turned deadly for one of the alleged robbers on the evening of Saturday, October 10, in the parking lot of the Magnolia Apartments at 5621 Highway 69 South, ABC 33/40 reported.
Tuscaloosa police were alerted at approximately 7:30 p.m. to a shooting victim who was being taken to an area hospital from the 1000 block of Inv. Dornell Cousette Street.
After processing the scene and speaking with witnesses, investigators determined that two 20-year-old suspects, identified as Kurtae’vious Earl Tyson and Daronte Collins, attempted to rob the 25-year-old victim before gunfire was reportedly exchanged.
Tyson was reportedly struck by gunfire during the incident and later died at the hospital. It is unclear whether the victim or Collins was injured.
Collins was later booked into the Tuscaloosa County Jail on charges of felony murder, first-degree robbery, attempted murder, and shooting into an occupied vehicle. Under Alabama law, felony murder applies to a death caused during the commission of any “felony clearly dangerous to human life,” regardless of whether the person killed was an accomplice in the felony.
Collins was reportedly denied bail under Aniah’s Law, which allows judges to deny pretrial release for suspects accused of certain dangerous offenses in Alabama.
Authorities have not said whether the victim is under investigation for his role in the exchange of gunfire, or whether shots fired by the victim caused Tyson’s fatal injuries.
