ARCADIA, WI - Over the last few months, the Arcadia Police Department (APD) has lost all of its officers leaving the biggest city in Trempealeau County without police.
According to WEAU, the depletion of the police department is putting more of a strain on the Trempealeau County Sheriff's Office (TCSO). Sheriff Brett Semingson said in a statement, "In recent weeks, the police officers down there have all left that agency for other opportunities that are going on, leaving them without any police officers except for an interim police chief."
This is not the first smaller-sized police department in the country to have lost all of its officers. Law Enforcement Today previously reported about the Craig Beach Police Department (CBPD) in Mahoning County, Ohio that lost all of its officers in April. The main question that is being asked is why? There is no clear answer, with many officers leaving for varying reasons, including taking new jobs outside of law enforcement.
Sheriff Semingson said, "It's not just unique to Arcadia, a lot of smaller agencies or law enforcement in general across the board are struggling to keep their employees or find new employees."
However, what is unique to Arcadia is that so many of the officers left at similar times. Arcadia's mayor, John Kimmel said, "Many departments face staffing shortages or other issues, ours just happened all at once. Our situation in Arcadia is unique in that our former officers moved on to new careers in a relatively short time frame, which has presented us with both a challenge and an opportunity."
Kimmel said the opportunity is to build a new department from the ground up, but while that happens, calls for help fall on the sheriff's office. Semingson said, "It puts a lot of strain on my deputies because of the additional calls they're taking plus the normal routine that they handle here in the county."
The sheriff's office is in Whitehall, which presents another challenge because when deputies respond to calls in Arcadia, it can take 20-30 minutes to get there. Semingson said, "Some of these calls are going to be serious within the City of Arcadia and require rapid response times. As a sheriff's office with the same staffing going on, we're going to have longer response times to get to those emergencies."
Regardless of those challenges, Semingson said the sheriff's office till be there when they can, ready to continue to protect and serve. Mayor Kimmel confirmed that the city has hired Nic Scholl as Arcadia's new chief of police. Scholl is expected to continue to work on rebuilding the department.
Kimmel said, "On behalf of the City of Arcadia, I wish to ensure our community members, our businesses, and our guests that we are working to rebuild and to staff our municipal police department. We are eager to have a full staffed and responsive department that is committed to meeting the safety needs of our community."
He added, "Our Common Council has been very supportive in keeping our department ahead with staffing, training, and equipment. I enjoy working with the Council in meeting the needs of our community and I look forward to working with a new and exceptional Arcadia Police Department."

“I’ve filmed with sheriffs and police chiefs all over America, and the one thing most of them have in common is that agencies and officers are stretched thin. The ‘defund the police’ movement has backfired... and Americans are now DEMANDING we restore law enforcement to keep our country safe,” he stated.
