NEW YORK, NY - Reports released this week have indicated that both Lin Gui’an, 49, the assistant director of the Police Commissioner Liaison Unit, a top aide to the scandalized New York Police Department Commissioner Edward Caban, and Caban himself have both resigned from the NYPD.
Reporting from The New York Post released on September 11th linked Gui'an with a discrete non-profit connected to a network of community groups and school associations controlled by the Chinese Communist Party referred to as "United Front."
Per the Post, Gui'an was vice chairman of the non-profit for 12 years, during which the group was known to "spread Chinese propaganda in the US, overseen by the United Front Work Department, funded and controlled by the central government in China."
Troublingly, the outlet reported that Gui'an was "handpicked" by Democrat Mayor Eric Adams for his role despite limited experience in law enforcement. An NYPD spokesman retorted Wednesday that Gui'an “came to the department as a Deputy Director which does not require mayoral approval. This was strictly a Police Commissioner appointment.”
Subsequently, NYPD Commissioner Caban also resigned from office just days after his home and his brothers were raided by federal agents according to Fox News.
In his resignation letter obtained by Fox, Caban said that the rank-and-file officers of the NYPD deserve leadership without distraction. In a statement through his attorneys, he told the outlet, "I have therefore decided it is in the best interest of the Department that I resign as Commissioner. After 30 years of service to this city, I hold immense respect and gratitude for its brave officers, and must put their interests before my own. I believe firmly in the vital role of leaders with integrity, who, by example, demonstrate the difference between right and wrong every day. I will continue to cooperate fully with the ongoing investigation."
Mayor Adams, who has also been mired in scandal announced that former FBI official Tom Donlon will take over the NYPD on an interim basis. He told reporters that Caban, "concluded that this is the best decision at this time, I respect his decision, and I wish him well."
In addition to Caban, as previously reported by the Post, Deputy Mayor for Public Safety Phil Banks, Tim Pearson, a retired NYPD inspector, working for the New York City Economic Development Corporation, Schools Chancellor David Banks, his brother Terence Banks, and First Deputy Mayor Sheena Wright have also been investigated by Federal agents in recent weeks. Caban's brother James, a former NYPD officer is also being investigated.
