Arrest made after fatal stabbing at Texas high school, 18-year-old charged with murder

MANOR, TX - Mac Brown Mbah Mbanwei, 18, was arrested Tuesday afternoon after stabbing a classmate, 18-year-old Darrin Loving repeatedly in the chest, wounding the young man fatally. Despite first responders rendering aid, the teenager died at the scene. Mbanwei was arrested shortly after the attack and was booked at the Travis County Jail on murder charges.

According to law enforcement officials speaking with the Austin American-Statesman, Mbanwei allegedly attacked Loving with a "large knife" in a classroom. A statement shared with USA TODAY by a spokesperson for the Manor Independent School District stated, "A student was stabbed on campus property by another student during an altercation. The suspect of the stabbing is in police custody."

As of this report, police have not released any information on a possible motive for the attack.

Captain Christa Stedman of Austin-Travis County EMS told the Statesman that EMS was called in at 12:47 p.m. Tuesday and the victim was pronounced dead at 1:12 p.m., approximately 25 minutes later.

Manor Police Chief Ryan Phipps told the outlet that the stabbing did occur in the classroom and that it was witnessed by other students who are now being interviewed, however, he did not know if class was in session at the time of the attack. Assistant Police Chief Denver Collins differed though, telling the American-Statesman Tuesday that the stabbing took place in a common area of the school.

Police speaking with USA Today described the attack as an isolated incident and said there was no ongoing threat to the public or to Manor High School students. Nonetheless, classes on Wednesday and Thursday were cancelled to allow student's time to grieve and process the incident.

"We understand that this situation raises concerns, and we will also be reviewing the security on campuses," Superintendent Robert Sormani told reporters. "Our priority is to be present for all students and staff as we navigate this difficult time together."

"We want to ensure our students and staff have the necessary time to process this loss and support one another," Sormani said in a statement. "We understand that this situation raises concerns, and we will also be reviewing the security on campuses. Our priority is to be present for all students and staff as we navigate this difficult time together."
