NEW YORK, NY - Open attacks on NYPD officers have escalated to the extent that it is being described as a "full-blown epidemic" as anti-police rhetoric, rampant illegal immigration, and soft-on-crime left-leaning prosecutors have increased pressure on officers.

According to The New York Post, the pattern of attacks has escalated drastically year over year. There were reportedly 4,724 attacks on uniformed officers resulting in injury in 2022 a marked increase of 20% over the 3,933 attacks in 2021. In 2023 there were 4,077 such attacks in the first nine months of the year, trending to a record-shattering 5,436 per NYPD statistics. The final data for Q4 of 2023 is still pending release.

Police Benevolent Association President Patrick Hendry told The New York Post, "Well over 5,000 cops were attacked and injured last year – that’s not only a record, it’s a full-blown epidemic."

He added, "The vicious attacks on police officers we’ve seen recently didn’t come out of nowhere. This dangerous environment has been building for years. . . . It’s not going to get better until those who attack police officers are consistently prosecuted and kept in jail. And that won’t happen unless New Yorkers keep speaking up to demand an end to the chaos.”

Delving deeper into the statistics released by the NYPD, the “Threat, Resistance and Injury” breaks the injuries of officers into three classifications: physical injury, substantial injury, and serious physical injury.

The breakdown is startling:

  • 295 officers were either substantially or seriously injured in 2021.
  • These increased by 7% to 315 in 2022.
  • In the first three quarters of 2023, there were 261 such incidents— on track to reach 348 by year's end, or a 10% increase
According to The Post, one 28-year-old officer from the Upper West Side told the outlet "everyone wants to fight," adding that she was recently assaulted while handcuffing a a shoplifter. She reportedly sprained her hand during the apprehension. The suspect who assaulted her was released from jail the same day.

A 40-year-old officer told reporters, "There’s no respect for the law," observing that he feels restrained in responding to violent suspects citing the overwhelming anti-police attitudes leading to public complaints and disciplinary action. He added, “Now, you have to be careful what you do. They’ll come after you."

As previously reported by Law Enforcement Today, a recent incident in New York City's Times Square involved the brutal beating of two NYPD officers by a mob of at least eight illegal immigrants.

Responding to another incident which saw a 15-year-old gunman open fire on police at Times Square, Hendry told NBC's Melissa Colorado, “You cannot shoot at a New York City police officer. You cannot shoot at a tourist. You will be in jail and stay in jail.”

Now New York expects the rest of the country to help them out? I don’t think so! They voted in another Liberal Democrat who wants to defund police and ask for more money to fund the illegal migration infestation. There needs to be a significant change in government attitude in New York as well as actions!
