DHS Secretary Slams Sanctuary Policies Following Violent Attack

BALTIMORE, MD - A 23-year-old illegal alien from Sierra Leone stands accused of kidnapping and nearly killing a 15-year-old girl during an alleged late October stabbing that took place inside a Baltimore basement, with the suspect reportedly having entered the country illegally years earlier only to be released by immigration authorities during the Biden administration.

Baltimore Police arrested 23-year-old Abubakarr Barrie on October 24 after authorities claim two days earlier he nearly killed a 15-year-old girl during a stabbing that reportedly occurred inside of a basement at a residence he was renting along the 3800 block of Belle Avenue.

Law enforcement initially responded to the residence at approximately 9:30 p.m. on October 22, where officers found the 15-year-old victim suffering from multiple stab wounds. Investigators say the underage victim had apparently been kidnapped by the suspect and dragged into his basement where the alleged attack occurred, with the child luckily having been able to escape.

Police later found Barrie roughly a half mile away from where the incident occurred on October 24 along the 3700 block of Garrison Boulevard where he was subsequently booked on charges of attempted murder, assault, false imprisonment and kidnapping.

Homeland Security officials confirmed Barrie had entered the United States illegally back in December 2023 through Arizona and was apprehended by Border Patrol before being released under the then-Biden administration’s catch-and-release policies.

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin highlighted this case as one of the many “failures” of sanctuary policies, as Barrie had already been arrested in New York City earlier in 2026 on charges of possession of a forged instrument, where an issued immigration detainer was reportedly ignored by officials in New York City.

“This tragedy would never have happened were it not for the multiple failures of sanctuary policies. First, Biden’s open borders let this monster into our country, then sanctuary politicians in New York refused to hand him over to ICE and released him after a previous arrest three months before this horrific crime,” Secretary Mullin stated.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has since issued a detainer for Barrie in the event of his release from custody on his latest charges.
