WASHINGTON, D.C. - In an announcement released Tuesday, President Joe Biden’s outgoing administration revealed that Cuba is to be removed from the U.S. government's list of state sponsors of terrorism.

White House officials are taking this move among others in an attempt to reconcile with Havana to push the Caribbean nation toward releasing political prisoners held in Buan prisons as part of a deal brokered in part by the Catholic Church according to Fox News.

In a “Certification of Recission of Cuba’s Designation as a State Sponsor of Terrorism,” the Biden Administration claims, “The Government of Cuba has not provided any support for international terrorism during the preceding 6-month period; and The Government of Cuba has provided assurances that it will not support accts of international terrorism in the future.”

"The United States maintains as the core objective of our policy the need for more freedom and democracy, improved respect for human rights, and increased free enterprise in Cuba," a White House national security memo obtained by Fox read.

"Achieving these goals will require practical engagement with Cuba and the Cuban people beyond what is outlined in NSPM-5 [National Security Presidential Memorandum 5], and that takes into account recent developments in Cuba and the changing regional and global context."

As reported by The New York Post, a Biden administration official told the press, “We view this as an opportune moment to do so, given the important dialogue that is taking place between Cuba and the Catholic Church with respect to political prisoners.”

“We believe that the number of people to be released will be significant.”

The official cited by the Post added, “We determined that there is a sufficient basis for the president to certify to Congress that Cuba has not provided any support for international terrorism during the preceding six-month period, which is what the statutory requirement is for this decision.”

During his confirmation hearing, Secretary of State nominee Senator Marco Rubio the son of Cuban emigrees stressed that despite the Biden Administration’s announcement, "Nothing that was agreed to [over the last 12 hours] is irreversible or binding on the new administration."

Congressman Carlos Gimenez who represents Southern Florida condemned the move in a post to X writing, “President Biden is a pathetic coward. Come January 20th, there will be a NEW SHERIFF in town & President Trump alongside Secretary of State @SenMarcoRubio will not only put #Cuba BACK on the list but PULVERIZE the regime once & for all!”
