KUNA, ID- Some might say karma has come to bite quadruple-murderer Bryan Kohlberger.
According to The New York Post, inmates at the only maximum security prison in Idaho are making Kohlberger’s time in prison “a living hell,” showing even some criminals have standards about what is acceptable.
According to a report, inmates decided to carry out a “campaign of harassment” against him after he reached a plea agreement with prosecutors to avoid the death penalty and was sentenced to four life terms without parole in an Idaho courtroom last month.
Kohlberger’s sentence came after he pleaded guilty to the brutal murders of four University of Idaho students in 2022.
According to former homicide detective Chris McDonough, who now works for the Cold Case Foundation, inmates at Idaho Maximum Security Institution “were aware he was coming.”
In an appearance on NewsNation, McDonough said the inmates would make Kohlberger’s life a living hell.
“The inmates were apparently waiting for him,” McDonough said. “And when he got there, they are now making his life absolutely miserable.”
Kohlberger’s plea drew outrage nationwide after the brutal murders of Xana Kernodle, Kaylee Goncalves, Madison Mogen, and Ethan Chapin at an off-campus house in Moscow.
It appears that inmates at the prison are not too fond of the brutality and senselessness of the killings.
“They got together and said, ‘OK, well, you know, how do we harass this guy?” McDonough, a former police officer, said. “And apparently, they set this up long before he got there…the guards were unaware of it until it started happening.”
Kohlberger is currently being held in solitary confinement in a block that holds 32 other prisoners, who are “the worst of the worst outside of death row,” McDonough said.
McDonough said the other inmates have engaged in a relentless campaign of taunting Kohlberger, taking turns yelling into the vents that make their way into his cell, around the clock.
“They’re utilizing the vent system. They’re kicking the doors. They’re taunting him,” McDonough said. “And they’re basically, you know, torturing him through, you know, using psychology. And my goodness, he’s complaining.”
McDonough told the Daily Mail that Kohlberger is “extremely annoyed and frustrated.”
Eventually, Kohlberger will likely be put into general population; however, for now, he’s going to have to adjust, McDonough said.
“The inmates have come up with a creative idea in harassing him to the point where it’s basically driving him crazy,” McDonough said.
As far as prison officials are concerned, there isn’t much they can do since Kohlberger is not currently at risk of physical harm due to being kept in his cell for 23 hours a day. He is allowed one hour of recreation daily; however is kept in shackles. He is also allowed to shower every other day.
“We are aware of Kohlberger’s complaints about what he considers taunting,” the Idaho Department of Corrections told The Post in a statement.
“Incarcerated individuals commonly communicate with each other in prison. Bryan Kohlberger is housed alone in a cell, and IDOC security staff maintain a safe and orderly environment for all individuals in our custody,” the statement said.
It appears that Kohlberger will get no more mercy than he gave his four innocent victims.
