CHARLOTTE, NC - The Trump administration has been making good on its mission to engage in the largest mass deportation effort in American history, along with targeting violent crime in major U.S. cities such as Chicago, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., and Memphis, where National Guard troops have been deployed to supplement local law enforcement. In other areas, such as Portland, Oregon, activist judges have blocked their efforts.
Now, Just The News is reporting that Charlotte, North Carolina, is next on the hit list.
Mecklenburg County Sheriff Garry McFadden said last week that federal officials notified him that Customs and Border Protection (CBP) personnel will start arriving in the Charlotte area this weekend or early this week.
“We value and welcome the renewed collaboration and open communication with our federal partners,” McFadden said in a statement reported in Politico. “It allows us to stay informed and be proactive in keeping Mecklenburg County safe and to maintain the level of trust our community deserves.” Charlotte is located within Mecklenburg County.
Earlier last week, some North Carolina officials appeared confused, saying there had been no communication between the sheriff’s office and CBP. The sheriff’s office emphasized that it will not be involved in any Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or CBP operations directly, Politico reported.
In response to questions about the upcoming operation, a spokesperson for the Department of Homeland Security refused to address it directly.
“Every day, DHS enforces the laws of the nation across the country,” Assistant Secretary of Public Affairs for DHS Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement. “We do not discuss future or potential operations.”
It is unknown why Charlotte is being targeted; however, in August, a Ukrainian refugee was fatally stabbed on a commuter train by an American with a long criminal arrest record.
Iryna Zarutska, 23, who fled war-torn Ukraine, was returning home from work at a pizzeria when she was attacked without provocation by Decarlos Brown, 34, a homeless man who has been charged with first-degree murder. Video of the brutal attack was captured by surveillance video on the train and has led to a call for tougher criminal justice practices.
