HOUSTON, TX - Houston police detectives are investigating after a body was discovered in an overturned trash can early Sunday morning at a city apartment complex located in the Third Ward, the Houston Police Department said.
Fox 2 Houston reports that at 12:13 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to a 911 call reporting gunshots and someone trying to stuff a body into a trash can. Because the reporting party blocked caller ID, officers were unable to return the call to get additional details. Officers were also unable to find any witnesses at the scene upon arrival.
Officers began conducting an investigation adjacent to a small apartment complex and found an overturned trash can with a body inside. Officers were unable to determine the exact cause of death or the nature of the person’s injuries.
“It was hard to tell the kind of trauma that was done,” a police official said in a briefing. “We couldn’t tell if it was a gunshot or blunt trauma or anything yet.”
During an area sweep, officers found blood trails leading to a nearby unit. The man inside refused commands to exit, forcing the department to deploy the Patrol Support Team, which used breaching equipment to force entry and take the occupant into custody.
The man was being questioned by police at press time. They are also questioning a second individual. Both are considered persons of interest, and no official suspects have been named. Homicide investigators continue processing the scene and examining the body for evidence.
