CHICAGO, IL – Earlier in February, the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation (CPMF) hosted their annual fundraising event aimed at providing Chicago Police Department (CPD) officers with new bulletproof vests, with the latest fundraiser serving as a slight deviation from their traditional pancake breakfast for something a little more fitting for The Windy City.
CPMF kicked off their 11th annual Get Behind the Vest Pancake Breakfast fundraiser on February 19th, which the aforementioned serves as a means to provide CPD officers with new bulletproof vests as the ones issued to officers when they graduate the academy degrade over time.
However, in a move that seems fitting considering the venue is Chicago, CPMF, along with their partners at Uniform Stores, opted to go for a pizza dinner alongside guest bartenders at Barraco’s off of West 111th Street in the city’s Beverly neighborhood.
In a Facebook post advertising the fundraising event, CPMF wrote, “Head up to Barraco's on 111th TONIGHT for fun night of guest bartending in support of Get Behind the Vest. Don't forget to grab some of the best pizza in the neighborhood while you're there,” with an accompanying flyer advertising guest bartenders like Rep. Mary Gill and Alderman Matt O’Shea.
Alderman O’Shea said of the event, “Chicago police officers are issued a vest when they graduate from the academy. That vest has a shelf life; it’s about five years. So the Chicago Police Memorial Foundation kicked off this campaign 11 years ago to purchase new vests as they rotate these vests through their lifespan.”
Since the inception of the Get Behind the Vest breakfast fundraising endeavor, CPMF has reportedly raised over $800K in funding for new vests for CPD officers. In overall fundraising efforts, the foundation has amassed over $6 million, which in turn has translated into approximately 15,000 new vests for officers within the city.
