Chicago: Illegal Immigrant Charged in Fatal Shooting Caught with Weapon in Jail

CHICAGO, IL - The man who has been accused of fatally shooting a Loyola University student at a North Side beach back in March was caught with a knife while in custody at Cook County Jail.

The Cook County Sheriff's Office (CCSO) said that staff at the Cook County Jail found a six-inch shank in Jose Medina's possession around 8:00 a.m. on Thursday, May 28, ABC7 reported. Upon conducting a search of Medina, 26, correctional officers discovered a sharpened piece of metal with a handle fashioned out of medical tape from his pants pocket, CCSO said.

Medina has been in custody since March 23. He has been charged with fatally shooting 18-year-old Sheridan Gorman at Tobey Prinz Beach in Rogers Park on March 19. The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) said that Medina, a Venezuelan national, entered the United States illegally in 2023.

Medina is facing felony charges of first-degree murder and aggravated use of a firearm, according to ABC7. DHS said Medina remained in Chicago despite being arrested by Border Patrol in 2023. Chicago police later arrested him again in that same year for retail theft charges at a Macy's store in the city.

Court records show Medina failed to appear for those charges, and that's when an arrest warrant was issued. The Cook County State's Attorney's Office approved a new felony charge of possession of contraband in a penal institution against Medina on Friday, May 29. Medina has pleaded not guilty to charges in Gorman's killing. His next court date is scheduled for June 1.

Prosecutors say Medina was hiding near the pier where Gorman and her friends were walking. Witnesses told police that they were suspicious of a man hiding there. An arrest report says witnesses saw Medina wfalking "with a very distinct and slow gait."

When the group of friends came upon Medina, who was wearing a mask and all-black clothing, he allegedly fired shots as they ran. Gorman was shot in the back and died from her injuries. After tracking surveillance video, police said Medina was arrested at his home near North Sheridan Road, just a couple of blocks from the scene.
