Chicago Mayor Demands That His Own Cops Defy ICE

CHICAGO, IL – Chicago’s Democratic mayor has reportedly ordered local authorities to not cooperate with federal agents slated to flood the Windy City in looming immigration raids, explicitly outlining a prohibition on any form of professional collaboration be it physically assisting with either patrols or even arrests.

In the two years since former Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot exited office to be replaced by Democrat Brandon Johnson, the closing sentiments from The Who’s 1971 classic “Won’t Get Fooled Again” seems like an appropriate characterization of Lightfoot’s successor, as the new proverbial boss of Chicago seems to be the same as the old boss with respect to not collaborating with immigration officials.

Back in June of 2019, then-Mayor Lightfoot infamously announced to the press that she’d ordered the Chicago Police Department to not assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) with any sort of immigration operations following an announced multi-state effort President Trump made on June 17th, 2019.

“I have also personally spoken with ICE leadership in Chicago and voiced my strong objection to any such raids. Further, I reiterated that CPD will not cooperate with or facilitate any ICE enforcement actions,” Lightfoot told members of the press on June 21st, 2019.

Current Chicago Mayor Johnson seems to be carrying the anti-immigration enforcement torch passed on by his predecessor, as he signed an executive order on August 30th instructing all local law enforcement to not assist members of the National Guard, nor federal officers and agents, with any sort of endeavor revolving around immigration enforcement or raids.

During a press conference announcing the non-collaborative effort with federal law enforcement, Mayor Johnson claimed the city of Chicago does “not have the luxury of time” in terms of attempting to hinder immigration enforcement operations, detailing how the Windy City will see what he described as “militarized activity” being utilized to root out individuals illegally residing within the United States.

“We have received credible reports that we have days, not weeks, before our city sees some type of militarized activity by the federal government,” Mayor Johnson stated, adding, “It is unclear at this time what that will look like exactly.”

According to the Chicago mayor, instructing local law enforcement to refuse assisting federal authorities with immigration enforcement operations is “how we can stand up against this tyranny,” ergo framing the allowance of illegal immigrants as being indicative of democracy if enforcing the laws regarding a nation’s borders is somehow tyrannical.

Mayor Johnson also stated, “We will use the courts if that’s necessary,” suggesting an attempt at lawfare aimed at the Trump administration to try to thwart enforcement of federal immigration law.

A White House spokesperson, Abigail Jackson, issued a statement calling Mayor Johnson’s antics part of a broader trend of “publicity stunts” aimed at generating favorable press without addressing genuine problems impacting American cities.

“If these Democrats focused on fixing crime in their own cities instead of doing publicity stunts to criticize the President, their communities would be much safer,” Jackson stated, adding, “Cracking down on crime should not be a partisan issue.”
