The ballot initative, Proposed Initiative 157, met the qualifications to appear on the state's general election ballot last month. The proposal would appropriate $350 million for the Colorado state legislature to distribute to law enforcement agencies and families of killed first responders.
The Colorado legislature would be authorized to spend the funds should the measure pass. The measure includes a $1 million one-time benefit for families of law enforcement actions killed in the line of duty, as well as funds for police pay increases and recruitment.
The backers of the proposal point to the benefit as a means to compensate those who have lost their loved ones in law enforcement service, according to Colorado Public Radio.
“Providing additional compensation for families of fallen officers upholds a social obligation to honor their sacrifice. Local law enforcement agency death benefits differ, with some providing fewer benefits than others. This measure guarantees that no matter where a fallen officer worked, their family will receive compensation for their loss.”
One policy organization for the state, the Colorado Legislative Council, estimates the payout would be made approximately four times a year at current rates. The payouts would be made out of the $350 million fund, with lawmakers responsible for reauthorizing funding when the sum is spent.
