HARTFORD, CT – Earlier in September, Democrat Connecticut Attorney General William Tong proclaimed before a crowd gathered in Hartford that individuals who “support” President Donald Trump and “stand” with his actions in office are “disqualified from serving in office” in Connecticut.
AG Tong’s political leanings and sentiments toward the current president are hardly a secret, as his office recently announced another lawsuit aimed at the Trump administration’s attempt to put an end to illegal immigrants becoming a burden on the public dole. This past August, AG Tong was also a party to a lawsuit against the Trump administration regarding imposed tariffs, as well as filing another lawsuit over efforts to prevent illegal aliens from obtaining CDLs.
Yet on September 10, AG Tong deviated from the typical lawfare against the president to instead proclaim that purported “acolytes” of President Trump are on notice in Connecticut, with a hyperbolic assertion that said “MAGA” candidates are “disqualified” from running for public office in the state.
“I think it's high time every single Republican candidate tells us in this state where you stand. Do you stand with Donald Trump, or do you stand with us? Because how can you support this president when he has tried to take all federal funding away from Connecticut? If you stand with him now, you're disqualified from serving in office in this state,” AG Tong stated before the crowd during the September 10 press briefing.
Preceding AG Tong’s proclamation of supposed “MAGA” candidates being “disqualified” from running for office, an assertion which clearly is unenforceable and can be chalked up to campaign rhetoric, he went on a diatribe about grievances pertaining to gas prices, tariffs, education budgets, and his personal disdain for federal immigration enforcement.
“If you're tired of $100 a barrel for gas, that shows up as $4, $5, $6 for gasoline here in Connecticut and across the country, stand with this ticket now. If you're tired of these tariffs, stand with us now. If you're tired of your school budgets being decimated, stand with us now. If you're tired of ICE terrorizing your communities so that people are afraid to go to school or go to work, stand with Democrats right now,” AG Tong stated.
In late August, ICE conducted operations in Connecticut, resulting in 118 arrests over the span of a single week of illegal aliens, many of whom had prior charges ranging from “sexual assault against a child, child abuse, weapons charges, drug dealing and assault,” according to a press release from the agency. According to AG Tong’s expressed sentiments on September 10, he is seemingly upset that child predators are being removed from the streets of Connecticut.
An opinion editorial published by the Connecticut Centinal was highly critical of AG Tong’s “purity test,” as the outlet put it, with the outlet emphasizing, “Nearly 42% of Connecticut voters picked Trump. Local voters do not need their attorney general weaponizing an ideological gatekeeping test before a Republican candidate is allowed to speak about the high cost of living in the state.”
