MINNEAPOLIS, MN - If anyone with more than a couple of brain cells believes this one, we’ve got some oceanfront property in Arizona to sell you. The New York Post reports that a daycare in Minneapolis run by Somalis miraculously experienced a break-in, and the thief or thieves helped themselves to “important documents.” However, Minneapolis police say the facility reported nothing missing to them.
The conveniently-timed “burglary” occurred as the Somali community in Minneapolis has drawn nationwide attention relative to an evolving multi-billion dollar fraud scandal involving human services, with much of the focus placed on daycare facilities run by Somali immigrants after dozens of Somalis have been arrested for stealing state funds, many of them provided by the federal government via grants.
The manager of the Nokomis Day Care Center told reporters that an unknown person entered through a kitchen at the rear of the facility, damaging a wall and breaking into an office. The “burglary” occurred sometime on Tuesday, December 30.
The manager, Nasulah Mohamed, said the “burglar” stole "important" documents, which conveniently included children’s enrollment records, employee documentation, and checkbooks. None of that information would be helpful to a burglar except for the checkbooks. It would be useful, however, to someone looking to hide information from government investigators.
A preliminary Minneapolis PD report, however, said that “no loss was reported to officers.” The department did note that the daycare reached out with additional information, but the updated police report wasn’t available.
The Post reported that video shared by the daycare center showed a hole in the wall that appeared to be a utility closet with “neatly stacked piles of cinder blocks behind the drywall.
Mohamed tried to blame investigative journalist influencer Nick Shirley, who released a viral YouTube video where he visited several daycare facilities in search of fraud, which wasn’t hard to find, for the incident.
“This is devastating news, and we don’t know why this is targeting our Somali community as one video made by a specific individual made this all happen,” he said, alleging they have received “hateful” and “threatening” messages over the last few days.
“This is frightening and exhausting,” Mohamed said, while portraying Shirley’s video as “false.”
The daycare in question was not among those portrayed in Shirley’s video, which has received over 100 million views.
Thus far, authorities in Minneapolis alone have discovered over $1 billion in fraud, including fraud involving food, housing, and childcare payments. The U.S. Attorney’s Office has warned that the actual figure could be as high as $9 billion.
Thus far, 92 people have been arrested in connection with the scheme, including 80 Somali immigrants, or 87% of the fraudsters.
In response to the burgeoning scandal, the Department of Health and Human Services said this week it was freezing all childcare payments to Minnesota, which amounted to $185 million in 2025, unless it is provided with proof that the payments are legitimate.
Feckless governor and tampon fanatic Tim Walz (D) attempted to flip the script and blamed the Trump administration for the scam that occurred under his watch long before President Trump won reelection.
Walz wrote on X that “This is Trump’s long game. We’ve spent years cracking down on fraudsters. It’s a serious issue—but this has been his plan all along. He’s politicizing the issue to defund programs that help Minnesotans.”
After Shirley’s video, The Post went to several of the daycares he highlighted in his video, including the hilariously misspelled “Quality Learing Center,” which, unlike during Shirley’s visit, was suspiciously busy, which must have come as a surprise to a man whom Shirley interviewed, who said the place is always a ghost town. That was despite the Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) saying it closed last week.
The department then issued a correction that the “Learing” center had said it was closing; however, it later said it was staying open. In another bizarre situation, the “daycare” operating hours are from 2 pm to 10 pm.
