Illinois Cops Make A Splash In Cold Waters For Warm Cause

O’FALLON, IL – A police department out of St. Clair County in Illinois has snagged the top spot in terms of funds raised for Special Olympics athletes within the state, reportedly raising in excess of $33,000 for the cause.

On February 28th, the O’Fallon Police Department, alongside members of the community, participated in a fundraising event meant to benefit Special Olympics athletes in Illinois, garnering over $33,000 during the effort.

The department shared the news on the successful endeavor via social media, making a slight pun regarding the temperature of the water while they were “taking the plunge for Special Olympics Illinois athletes.”

“On Saturday, members of the O'Fallon Police Department and some awesome community members continued a long tradition of taking the plunge for Special Olympics Illinois athletes. Together this team raised over $33,000, top Police Department in the region and the state,” the statement from the department reads, adding, “Don't worry, the water temp was a cool 34 at time of plunge and all plungers made it out.”

Local news outlet Metro East Star reported earlier in February how the O’Fallon Police Department ranked as one of the highest fundraising vehicles among police departments throughout the state pertaining to Special Olympics athletes last year. According to the outlet, the O’Fallon Police Department raised just shy of $140,000 for the cause throughout 2025.

The news of the funds raised during 2025 was shared during the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics Illinois Kickoff Conference held in Bloomington earlier in February, where it was reported that “The department said it raised $136,928 in 2025, ranking first in Illinois in the 26–75 officers category and second overall statewide.”

At the time of the recognition during the February conference, the O’Fallon Police Department issued a statement reading, “This accomplishment reflects the generosity of our community and the dedication of our team. Your support makes this possible.”
