Dallas officer blind in both eyes after responding to 'targeted' attack that killed fellow officer

DALLAS, TX - A female police officer with the Dallas Police Department (DPD) is now blind in both eyes after responding to a "targeted" attack" that injured another officer and killed a third.

According to WFAA, 27-year-old DPD Sr. Cpl. Karissa David responded to the scene of a shooting where armed suspect Corey Cobb-Bey had fatally shot Officer Darron Burks while he was sitting in his police car. At the time of the incident, DPD Chief Eddie Garcia said, "Officer Burks was executed ... Our officers were targeted for nothing more than the uniform they wear and for the brave and honorable job that they do."

Police said that when David arrived on scene, Cobb-Bey ran towards her and shot her multiple times as she exited her vehicle. David was shot in the face and transported to the hospital in critical condition. Another officer, Sr. Cpl. James Farmer, was also injured during the shooting, but he was treated and later released from the hospital.

On Thursday, September 19th, David's family posted an update on the GoFundMe page they set up for her saying that she is out of the hospital and will be receiving outpatient care for several months. They wrote, "She has a big surgery back in the hospital next week on her jaw and teeth and various other specialist appointments scheduled." The update also says reveals that she is currently blind in both eyes.

Her family said, "Money that comes in will be used for modifications to their home, technology and devices that will aid her in living without her vision, and transportation to the therapies and care she needs." As of this writing, the GoFundMe has received $68,000 of its $100,000 goal.

According to FOX 4, Chief Garcia recently spent the day with David saying, "One of the strongest women I've ever met. She has an unbelievable spirit and sense of humor. Amazing, an absolute warrior." David reportedly got married just six weeks before the shooting. The armed suspect, Cobb-Bey, reportedly posted several online videos the week of the targeted attack where he claimed police officers in an unmarked black SUV were following him.

In another video, he confronted who he thought were police officers in an unmarked white SUV, asking if everything was OK, or if crimes were going on that the community should be aware of. The chief also said that there is evidence that Cobb-Bey was a member of the Moorish Sovereign Citizens, which is an offshoot of the anti-government sovereign citizens movement "whose members have engaged in violent confrontations with law enforcement."

If this were a small agency, I could understand the need for this appeal. However, Dallas is large enough to pay for these necessities. I retired LAPS 30 + years ago and was treated well by the City, including more than a dozen post-retirement surgeries . This should all be covered under work comp, and I hope she is treated better by Dallas. This is not to put down the Officer, I can’t imagine what she is going through being blinded and my heart goes out to her.
