TRENTON, NJ - In the November governor’s race, Democrat Mikie Sherrill portrayed herself as a moderate. Of course, in today’s Democrat Party, the only moderate is Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA), and in most cases, even that is a stretch. However, Sherill’s latest move is proof that she pulled a fast one on the voters of New Jersey.
According to a Substack post from Hans Herberg, host of The Liberty Line podcast and a former New Jersey gubernatorial candidate, Sherrill announced a new state-run portal designed to have a government-run doxing program (at taxpayer expense) that will allow residents to report and track ICE operations.
As we have seen in Minnesota, this ill-conceived scheme is likely not to end well.
Herberg writes that the doxing platform will allow individuals to upload videos, photos, locations, and accounts of federal immigration enforcement activity, all designed to interfere with federal government enforcement of immigration law. Seditious activity, if you will.
Sherrill and her fellow Democrats portray the program as being about “transparency” and “civil rights.” As Herberg so poignantly observes, what it truly is is “a government-sanctioned surveillance system aimed at federal law enforcement.”
It is stunning that the very same people who hold so-called “no kings” rallies, complain about government overreach, worry that President Trump is going to lock people up in concentration camps, and so on, are proposing to act exactly like the dictators they claim to despise.
However, none of this should come as a surprise.
During the COVID scare, these same control freaks imposed mask mandates on everyone, including school children, forced people to stand six feet apart with no scientific basis to do so, threatened to arrest people for attending church services while permitting thousands of people to riot together in the streets with impunity, and had people fired for refusing to take the experimental jab.
If there is one lesson COVID taught us is that Democrats, given even a little power, get consumed with it, like alcoholics craving the last drop of bourbon in their bottle.
Democrats who told us that people trespassing on the US Capitol grounds on Jan. 6, 2021, were committing an “insurrection” against the government. Now, those same Democrats are attempting to undermine the same government they pretended to care about.
Herberg warned that what Sherrill and the power-mad New Jersey Democrats are proposing “should alarm every American, regardless of where you stand on immigration.”
“This portal does not protect civil liberties. It weaponizes them,” he wrote.
There have been a couple of unfortunate incidents over the past few weeks, incidents by the way that likely would not have occurred had so-called sanctuary mayors and governors simply allowed ICE to take illegals into custody, not on the streets, but in prisons, jails, courthouses, and police departments.
These same sanctuary politicians, aided and abetted by the mainstream media and Hollywood dipshits, have so inflamed the radical fringe in this country that they have made it impossible for the Department of Homeland Security to do its job.
We might also remind you that it was these same Democrats who looked the other way as Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Alejandro Mayorkas, and others rolled out the welcome mat to over 15 million illegal aliens. It is now left up to the Trump administration to clean up its mess.
This portal, Herberg wrote, “encourages civilians to follow, film, and report ICE agents simply for doing their jobs. It creates a chilling effect where federal officers have to wonder if every arrest, every stop, every operation will be uploaded, flagged, and politicized by a hostile state government.”
Is it any wonder why ICE agents and other federal law enforcement officials are on edge? When this happens, mistakes or tragic consequences can occur.
Herberg surmises what would have happened if a Republican governor (under a Democrat administration) launched such a portal to track ATF, DEA, or IRS agents.
What if, when Biden hired 100,000 IRS agents, Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) launched a portal to report IRS agents?
The sows on The View would have had a meltdown, and Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi would have demanded an investigation by the Department of Justice. Now, it’s the “evil” ICE agents who are under the microscope.
ICE, DHS, CBP, and other agencies are merely following federal law. By encouraging residents to basically interfere with ICE operations, it “potentially puts officers, suspects, and bystanders at risk.” As we’ve seen in the past few weeks.
According to Herberg, Sherrill’s office has not said how exactly this information will be used.
“Who reviews the submissions? Political appointees? Activists? Attorneys with an agenda? Will locations be shared in real time? Will reports be released publicly? Will ICE operations be compromised before they are even completed?” he asked.
In Minneapolis, far-left activists are using Signal to broadcast ICE locations and call in the mob. And that has led to violent confrontations, with two turning deadly.
Now we have a state government that is apparently deciding to get into the business of fomenting riots and assaults on law enforcement officials. If something goes wrong, who will be responsible? Who is going to face the consequences?
It is beyond belief that this information will not be used to interfere with ICE operations. As Herberg astutely observed, Sherrill’s folly is not about the rights of immigrants, illegal or otherwise.
It is about opposing the federal government, currently under the control of Donald Trump. It signals the radical, unhinged left that the New Jersey state government is on their side, no matter how much violence they use against ICE.
Virtually the only place violence is occurring surrounding immigration operations is in blue cities operating under sanctuary policies. Per capita arrests of illegal aliens are much higher in red jurisdictions that are cooperating with federal immigration authorities, yet there is little, if any, violence. Why do you suppose that is?
It is because leftist activists are fat, dumb, and happy in sanctuary jurisdictions because they know the political class has their back. There is zero accountability for them, and nothing but accountability for those attempting to enforce federal law.
From Herberg:
“You can believe in humane immigration policy while still recognizing that undermining law enforcement through civilian reporting portals is reckless. You can oppose abuses without creating a system that invites harassment, misinformation, and mob pressure against officers.
“Once you normalize tracking one agency, the precedent is set. Tomorrow it is ICE. Next year it is another agency. Eventually, it is anyone the political class decides is inconvenient.
“This is how trust collapses. This is how the rule of law erodes. Not overnight, but piece by piece, wrapped in the language of safety and rights.”
On January 27, 1838, Abraham Lincoln was invited to give a speech at the Young Men’s Lyceum in Springfield, Illinois. In that speech, Lincoln said:
“At what point then is the approach of danger to be expected? I answer, if it ever reach us, it must spring up amongst us. It cannot come from abroad. If destruction be our lot, we must ourselves be its author and finisher. As a nation of freemen, we must live through all time, or die by suicide.”
This speech is often simplified as Lincoln claiming that “America can only be destroyed from within.” While he didn’t use those specific words, the excerpt quoted above is pretty close.
What we see occurring in our once-proud nation, rebellion and insurrection being encouraged by one side of the political aisle, is pushing us in the direction of seeing our country destroyed.
From Herberg:
“Because when the government starts encouraging citizens to report on law enforcement for political reasons, history shows that it never ends where it starts.
“And it rarely ends well.”
New Jersey’s proposed doxing app is one giant step forward down that slippery slope.
