ARAPAHOE COUNTY, CO - The Colorado dentist accused of fatally poisoning his wife in 2023 through the administration of toxic protein shakes was found guilty of murder earlier this July, with the judge overseeing the case handing down a life sentence to the disgraced dentist.
On July 30th, a jury inside an Arapahoe County courtroom found 47-year-old James Craig guilty of the 2023 murder of his wife, Angela Craig.
Craig was charged two years ago for the murder of his 43-year-old wife after investigators learned she died via a toxic concoction administered by the deceased’s husband through the likes of smoothies and protein shakes.
Following Angela’s death in March of 2023, suspicions grew as to whether her numerous hospitalizations that led up to her death were the result of some kind of then-undetected poison.
Ensuing toxicology reports found significant traces of cyanide and tetrahydrozoline, with the former chemical being one ordered by Craig through his dental practice prior to Angela’s passing.
Craig apparently used his dental practice to acquire the likes of potassium cyanide. This grabbed the attention of investigators back in 2023, as “there was no medical reason or purpose to order potassium cyanide for their dental practice,” according to Craig’s original arrest warrant.
The plot to murder his wife began back in February of that year, with investigators learning that Craig had been searching online for ways to purchase arsenic, how many grams of the substance would kill a person, and whether it was detectable in an autopsy.
Angela began to undergo a series of hospitalizations beginning March 6th, 2023, with each visit and stay showcasing the same symptoms of dizziness, vomiting, and generally deteriorating health occurring at a rapid pace.
Twelve days after Angela’s initial hospitalization, she was taken off of life support following a seizure and passed away.
During opening statements of Craig’s trial, which kicked off on July 15th, prosecutors pointed to the malicious actions taken by the dentist at every step during Angela’s final days.
Prosecutor Ryan Brackley told the court that during one of Craig’s visits to the hospital, he coldly administered more of the lethal toxins to his ailing wife, saying, “He didn’t go into that room to fight for her life or support her. He went into that room to murder her, to deliberately and intentionally end her life with a fatal dose of cyanide.”
After a jury found Craig guilty of his wife’s murder, along with various other charges related to the heinous crime, Judge Shay Whitaker delivered some harsh words in tandem with the life sentence handed down.
“The evidence, the crime, the verdict, and the sentence all speak for themselves. Dr. Craig unleashed a path of destruction as wide as a tornado and just as devastating - damage to his children, damage to Angela's family, damage to his own family.”
Mark Pray, a representative for the deceased’s family, shared a statement following the verdict and sentence in the case, saying Angela’s family is pleased with the outcome, adding, “This has been an incredibly difficult time for our family. We take comfort in the integrity and commitment by everyone who stood with us in pursuit of justice and our children.”
